Rebecca wasn't really trying to listen, but the voices nearby were impossible to ignore.
“Garnett Michel, I swear, if I fail the Apex Academy entrance exam one more time, you and your mom better watch your backs. The Michel family won't leave you with anything.”
“This is between you and me. Leave my mom out of it. She’s already sick enough. You can’t keep making things worse for her.”
Rebecca slowed her pace. That voice sounded familiar.
“Why shouldn’t I make things harder for you? Your dad’s illegitimate kid. He said you were born to be my stepping stone. If you can’t do even that, you and your sick mother might as well die together. That way the Michels won’t have to waste money on useless people like you.”
Just as Rebecca passed the fork in the woods, a boy she didn’t recognize came out from the trees. He saw her standing there and jumped, looking ready to snap at her before realizing who she was. The moment he recognized Rebecca, his mouth clamped shut. He ducked his head and rushed away.
A few seconds later, a tall, slender guy stepped out behind him. Rebecca noticed right away that it was the same student who’d shown her around on her first day.
Garnett saw her standing there and just froze, clearly surprised to run into anyone at that moment. “You…”
His face was swollen and his collar was all out of place. No doubt about it, he’d just been in a fight.
“I was just passing by,” Rebecca said, keeping her tone light. “Need any help?”
Garnett’s lips curled into a half-smile, but it was more tired than anything. “No, I’m fine.”
He clearly didn’t believe anyone could actually help him.
Rebecca was about to turn and go when he suddenly called after her.
“Hey… That advice you gave us last time really helped. Edmond and I said we’d thank you if we saw you again. So… thanks.”
Rebecca just waved her hand as if it was no big deal. “It was just a suggestion. You guys made the changes yourself. You don’t owe me anything.”
