She glanced at her phone and saw a familiar number flash across the screen.
“Bekki, guess what? I’m at Vantage Point University, but Wade won’t let me in. He even warned me not to contact you. Like that’s going to stop me. Are you free tonight? We should get together. Oh, and Susan is here too.”
Rebecca couldn’t help but smile at the message.
It was Elbert Camp, the music maestro who had been determined to make her his protégé ever since he first heard her play Waltz in A Minor.
And Susan—he always meant her manager, the one handling everything for The Grand Resonance.
“Bekki, we’re already near campus tonight to discuss something with Wade. We decided to grab dinner after. Since you’re here, why not join us?”
Susan, who never missed a chance to impress Elbert, quickly jumped in to persuade her.
“But Vantage Point University isn’t open to outsiders,” Rebecca replied. “If I break the rules, I could get in trouble. Maybe let’s do this another time?”
Rebecca had a strong feeling Elbert showing up wasn’t just a coincidence, and she really wasn’t in the mood for complications.
Susan picked up on her hesitation, her voice suddenly turning soft and a bit dramatic.
“Bekki, do you even remember the last time we got together? It’s been a year. You haven’t sent me any new work or checked in about the competitions. I get that you’re busy—I’ve never bothered you about it—but you can’t just keep ignoring everything forever, right?”
Rebecca felt a stab of guilt. The whole mess with the James and Gates families had kept her busy for a year, and Susan had gotten lost in the shuffle. It didn’t feel right to keep brushing her off.
“Okay,” Rebecca replied, giving in, “just send me the address. I’ll come straight over.”
She could practically hear Susan’s relief through the phone. “See, I told Elbert you have a heart! I’ll wait for you tonight!”
A notification popped up on her phone a few minutes later with the location.
