Wade could see that Lily just wasn't going to listen, so he dropped the topic altogether.
“Lily, the Apex Academy exam is in three days. Please, try not to make any trouble before then. Once the exam is over, we’ll figure out what happens with Rebecca.”
He was so firm about protecting Rebecca that Lily knew there was no chance of changing his mind. Furious and frustrated, she stormed out of the office.
Ablitt got ushered out too, leaving just Wade and Rebecca behind.
Wade shot Rebecca a look that said he was about to give her a lecture.
“Bekki, you’ve got some nerve. You actually went after Lily this time.”
Rebecca didn’t even bother denying it. She just nodded. “I gave her a reminder. It’ll pass in a few days.”
Wade shook his head and pointed a finger at her, but there was no real anger in his voice. “You really can’t let anything go, can you? Still, this wasn’t all your fault. I wanted you in the best class, but I guess I should’ve thought it through more. It kind of backfired.”
Rebecca just shrugged and said quietly, “It’s not your fault.”
Wade relaxed a little, visibly relieved. He’d half-expected Bekki to blame him and walk out, but instead, she was surprisingly easy to talk down.
Then Rebecca spoke again, making him instantly nervous.
“Wade, Elbert and Susan are here. I need to go out tonight.”
“What?” Wade’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. He looked genuinely worried. “Who told you? Where are they now?”
Rebecca just stared at him in disbelief, not quite sure what to make of his anxiousness.
Finally, after a lot of pleading from Wade, she agreed to bring him along. They’d have to face those people soon anyway. Might as well get it over with.
