When Norris didn’t press her for more, she took a breath and nervously bit her lip before going on.
“Nash used to work with this well-known international company, MR Group. Out of nowhere, they refused to renew his contract. He’s already tried pretty much everything, but nothing’s worked. I heard you’ve had some brief dealings with them, so I was hoping you could maybe introduce us. Would that be okay?”
Norris looked down thoughtfully, his dark eyes hidden behind long, thick lashes. It was impossible to tell what he was thinking.
As silence dragged on, Nash’s heart was thumping all over the place.
“Are you asking this because I owe you my life, Shirley?” Norris’s voice was even, showing no hint of how he felt.
Shirley tensed up inside. Was that a dig, calling her out for using the whole life-saving debt?
“Mr. White, I’m genuinely asking for your help,” she said, a little desperate. “I’m just hoping that because I helped you before, you’ll be willing to help Nash now.”
Hearing that, Aaron let out a quiet, helpless sigh. This definitely wasn’t Shirley’s first time bringing up the life-saving favor whenever she needed something from Norris. There was The James Group order, then the invitation to that fancy auction, and the top-tier medical care for her and Harriet, and now this trouble with The Gateses... it felt never-ending.
Mr. White was really running out of patience.
“If this is the last time you ask me for help, Shirley, then I’ll consider it.” Norris sat straight in his wheelchair, looking distant and elegant, every bit the man used to being above it all. “But if it’s not, then I’m sorry. I have to refuse.”
Shirley hadn’t expected him to be so blunt. Her face went pale. “Mr. White, so you’re going back on your word?”
Seriously? He said he'd repay her for saving his life, and now she’d only asked a handful of times and he was already done with it.
Nash wasn’t any happier. “Mr. White, you’re a big name in Harrisburg. Everyone knows about how Shirley saved you. If you turn her down now, aren’t you worried people will call you ungrateful?”
