Inside the car, Rebecca grew tense the moment she sensed someone’s eyes on her again. She glanced out the window just as they turned the corner and spotted Shirley and Nash standing by the entrance to Nocturne.
Wade noticed and leaned in, his brow furrowed. “Bekki, something up?”
Rebecca shrugged, sounding indifferent. “Just saw two people I’d rather not deal with.”
Wade knew better than to pry when she got like this. He let it go, pausing for a moment before bringing up the thing Susan had mentioned earlier. “Bekki, The Grand Resonance is being hosted at Vantage Point University this year. Does that bother you?”
While he spoke, Rebecca’s phone buzzed with a message from Odom. The auction buyer was pestering her again about scheduling a consultation. She typed a quick reply back, barely looking up. “Whatever works for you. I’m good with anything.”
Wade stroked his mustache, deep in thought. “Alright, I’ll get someone to set it up for after your Apex Academy exams. That’ll give you a bit more breathing room.”
Rebecca didn’t bother replying. She was only at Vantage Point University to pick up a bachelor’s to keep her parents off her back. Nothing else mattered.
As soon as she finished replying to Odom, another text came in. This time, it was from someone named L.
[The new collection for this season is due. I don’t care how busy you are, the design drafts have to be on my desk. Also, there's a show coming up. I already agreed you’d be the headliner. If you’re still breathing, reply to me.]
Through the screen, Rebecca could practically feel their frustration.
[I’ll do my best,] she wrote back, rubbing at her brow. Why did everything have to come crashing down at once?
“Not that many. I might've mentioned it in a group chat I’m in now and then. It's just a bunch of old friends. No big deal, really. We barely talk, only here and there.”
Rebecca had always been careful, keeping her different circles separate to avoid exactly this kind of mess. If it wasn’t for Wade and Elbert, both notorious for running their mouths, her secret would’ve been safe a little longer. Luckily, only those two seemed to get along like that. If the rest ever caught on, she’d be done.
“Give me your phone,” she said, her tone leaving no room for argument.
Wade hesitated, thinking about all the embarrassing things he’d texted for attention. But faced with Rebecca’s no-nonsense glare, he handed it over without another word.
Rebecca unlocked the group chat. There were only four people in it. Besides Wade and Elbert, the other two worked in biological research. It definitely wasn’t L.
