When she saw Wade, at his age, dropping baby-talk into the chat and spamming melodramatic sound effects, Rebecca’s face contorted in disgust. She tossed the phone back at him like it was contagious.
Wade’s cheeks turned red. He caught the phone, embarrassed and grumbling under his breath. “I really only do that once in a while. You should see Elbert, he’s even more ridiculous. Honestly, if it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t…”
Rebecca stayed quiet, letting it sit for a second. Then she finally spoke, “I heard there are a bunch of big names in our industry gathering in Harrisburg soon. Do you know anything about that?”
Wade perked up straight away, suddenly all seriousness and business. “Let me check into it. I’ll tell you what I find out tomorrow.”
She nodded, wishing it wasn’t some kind of trouble.
Her phone buzzed again. This time it was Jackson calling.
The second she saw the number, her face went cold. She raised an eyebrow, declined the call without a second thought, then blocked the number.
Back at the James house.
Jackson stared at his phone as the call disconnected. He tried again, but only got a busy signal. It was obvious—she’d blocked him. He slammed his phone down, fuming. “Ungrateful girl!”
Harriet rolled her eyes at him. “I told you from the start, you’d never be able to keep her loyal. And now look. First, she goes off to work as somebody’s housekeeper, gets together with them to scam me and Shirley out of twenty million, and now she’s run off to be some old man’s… whatever. If people find out about this, what will happen to our reputation?”
