Rebecca had just been reading when someone called her name. She lowered the book, her movements slow and unhurried.
At the door stood a guy she’d seen not long ago, pretty sure his name was Gavin Michel. Clutched by the collar in Gavin’s grip was Garnett, thin and pale.
Garnett looked even worse than the last time she’d glimpsed him. His right eye was swollen shut, and there were streaks of dried blood on his shirt collar.
The scene was tense, but Paulina only smiled a little as she stood and asked, “Hey, did Rebecca cause you any trouble? Don’t be upset. Just tell us what happened.”
Gavin, who’d come in looking furious, seemed to shrink back at the sight of Paulina. Her gentle voice and soft features made him all nerves. He had been crushing on her for a year now. “I...”
Paulina caught his hesitation and flashed him an encouraging smile. “No pressure. Take your time.”
Gavin’s cheeks turned red, his heart probably pounding out of his chest. But then he looked at Rebecca and saw nothing but cool indifference in her eyes, and his anger surged all over again.
“It was Rebecca! She stole the song I wrote. She gave it to Garnett so he could show it to the teachers first and get ahead of me. Now I don’t have time to write something new, and the Apex Academy exam is only two days away.”
No one liked a plagiarism scandal, especially right before an important exam like this one.
As soon as people heard what Gavin was saying, their faces soured with disgust.
Felice was the first to jump to her feet, ready to pass judgment.
Rebecca stayed put. She knew exactly where she’d made changes when she helped Garnett with his music, and she wasn’t interested in playing along. Instead, she watched Garnett, who still hadn’t said a word.
That was when Garnett finally spoke up.
He pulled free from Gavin’s grasp, straightened his clothes, and addressed everyone in the room.
“Gavin isn’t telling the truth. Rebecca helped me fix up this music the day she arrived at school. I planned to polish it some more, but Gavin found it in my bag and claimed it was his. Now he’s making a scene, trying to get ahead, leave me defenseless, and drag Rebecca into it with me.”
Gavin looked at him like he’d lost his mind. “Garnett, stop making things up. That music is mine. I have the first draft saved on my hard drive. What proof do you have that it belongs to you?”
