Rebecca pressed her lips together, thinking about all the hurdles facing medicine these days. She didn’t say no, just let the topic hang for a moment.
“We can talk about this later.”
Wade, who’d been looking a little down, perked up right away. He knew it—Bekki always acted like nothing bothered her, but deep down, she really cared and couldn’t help being soft.
Trying to keep things light, he changed the subject. “So, what about that lab? Did you ever pick a spot? Is there anything decent at Vantage Point University?”
Rebecca shook her head. “No, too crowded here. Too many people watching, and it’s impossible to run background checks on everyone. We’ll have to look somewhere else.”
Wade nodded, clearly relieved she felt the same way. “Alright, I’ll see what I can find and let you know when there’s news.”
Rebecca finished her game, stretched, and started to leave when Wade called her back.
“Wait, I didn’t get to ask you last time—what’s your connection to the Russells?”
At the mention of Madonna and Fabian, Rebecca’s eyes softened with a warmth she rarely showed.
“They’re my family.”
“Family?” Wade’s face lit up as realization hit. He remembered the Russells’ daughter who’d gone missing years ago. He broke into a proud smile. “Madonna and Fabian never gave up looking for you. They’ll take good care of you. This is great news. At least you won’t have to put up with the Jameses anymore.”
Rebecca almost never talked about her family, but Wade knew more than most. He’d worked with her the longest and knew she’d been adopted by the Jameses—and how badly they’d treated her.
He’d wanted to adopt her as his own granddaughter more than once, but worried it would cross a line. Instead, he just gave hints, never saying it out loud unless she brought it up.
Now that she’d found her own parents, he finally let himself relax. Rebecca nodded and gave a soft “Mm.” In a way, Wade was the person who cared about her the most.
Her skills in medicine? She owed a lot to him. He was more than a teacher, really—almost family.
