Paulina froze. Seeing the deep disapproval etched into Magee's face, she carefully played dumb. “I've never experienced anything like that, so I'm not really sure... But Ms. Lily is always perfectly fine around us. It's probably just an exaggeration.”
As long as Lily treated her well, what did it matter how she treated everyone else? Besides, Lily despised Rebecca. That made her a highly useful asset. Paulina wanted Lily to abuse her power as much as possible, especially if it meant crushing Rebecca. Her vague defense was calculated to ease Magee's doubts.
But Magee wasn't swayed. He turned to the students sitting nearby. “Have any of you witnessed this?”
The Class A students exchanged uncomfortable glances and shook their heads. They spent their lives buried in textbooks and labs. They never paid attention to what Lily did outside the classroom. But hearing the sheer volume of complaints made their faces burn with embarrassment. Even though Lily was their teacher and they couldn't openly bash her, that didn't mean they condoned her actions.
“Magee, if so many people are saying it, maybe... maybe Ms. Lily really does cross the line sometimes,” one boy admitted awkwardly.
“Yeah, but she's never like that in our class.”
“Let's just keep watching.”
Magee nodded, his attention returning to the live feed.
Seeing the students—who normally worshipped the ground she walked on—siding with logic instead of blindly agreeing with her, Paulina felt an invisible needle pierce her chest. Her perfectly sweet smile threatened to shatter.
Taking a deep breath, she reminded herself that none of this would matter soon. She was betting everything on Rebecca failing this exam. Now, she just needed Gavin to finish the job.
Inside the exam room.
Clutching his violin to his chest, Garnett pleaded desperately. “President Lane, Dean, professors, please just give me one more minute! The intro is slow for a reason. If you just listen to the transition—”
Jack Morgan knew his position was precarious. Even though he suspected Garnett was innocent, he hadn't wanted to intervene. But Lily's insults were crossing every professional boundary, and he could no longer stay quiet.
“Ms. Lily, watch your mouth! This is an Apex Academy qualification exam, not your personal debate stage. Refrain from the personal attacks!”
Hearing Lily's unhinged rant, The Dean instantly checked Wade's reaction. Wade's expression was carved from stone, his lips pressed into a tight, hard line. The Dean recognized the warning signs of an impending eruption.
He immediately slammed his hand on the table. “Ms. Lily, have you lost your mind? Have you completely forgotten what is and isn't appropriate to say in an examination setting?”
Downstairs, the students knew Lily was notoriously overbearing, but watching her openly disrespect a fellow homeroom teacher in front of the university's president was a whole new level of insanity.
