Sophia knew she couldn't outshine Paulina in the looks department, so she picked a princess dress that played to her strengths. When they stepped out of the car together, she walked tall, doing her best to look every bit the elegant princess by Paulina’s side.
But as soon as she hit the pavement, Sophia spotted Rebecca climbing out of another car. Of course, Rebecca was dressed in her usual low-key style—a basic T-shirt and long pants. Sophia’s mood nosedived in an instant.
“Rebecca, do you even realize what kind of event this is? How can you show up looking like that? You’re making our whole family look bad!” she snapped.
Rebecca hadn’t slept well the night before. Hearing Sophia start up again, she couldn’t even hide her irritation. “I’ll wear what I want. If you don’t like it, that’s your problem, not mine.”
Sophia clenched her jaw, her anger barely under control.
Paulina, ever the peacemaker, spoke softly, “Sophia, maybe don’t give Rebecca such a hard time. She probably just couldn’t find the right jewelry to go with a fancy dress, so she decided not to wear one.”
The second she heard that, Sophia felt like she had it all figured out. Rebecca was probably jealous that Paulina got that brand-new Lady.M necklace and she had nothing. Now she was just dressing down on purpose, maybe hoping Irvin would notice and take pity on her.
“Rebecca, you honestly think not wearing a dress is going to make Irvin buy you a necklace? Keep dreaming. Irvin and Paulina are a perfect match. Even I’m jealous, so don’t start thinking you’re special. Stay in your lane—and don’t embarrass the Russells again.”
Rebecca’s eyes went cold. Since their trip from Cabinda to Harrisburg, Sophia had been on her back nonstop, always using the family’s name to push her around. Honestly, her patience was wearing thin.
“If you still want a shot at bidding for Ambrosia Vitae today, I’d suggest you leave me alone.”
Her voice was icy, and the way she looked at Sophia sent a chill right through her.
Just then, a sleek black Maybach slid up to the curb.
