Her voice grew colder with every word, until it was enough to make anyone shiver.
Harriet felt her heart drop. Even the assistant was a little shaken. Rebecca wasn’t someone you wanted to mess with.
But the assistant couldn’t just let the two families fall apart, so he forced a smile and stepped in. “Ms. Russell, Shirley, the auction’s about to start. If you don’t head in now, you might miss your chance.”
Just like that, the tension came to a stop, though no one was really feeling any better about it.
Despite the uncomfortable scene, Harriet and Shirley stayed in high spirits. Being the wealthiest in Harrisburg didn’t mean much, not when their family roots were still so new. This was the first time they’d even gotten an invitation to an auction at this level.
Their private suite had everything. Expensive wine lined the shelves, plates of imported fruit and delicate pastries sat waiting on the table. It was almost too good to be true.
“Mom, Nash told me everything on auction tonight is super rare, stuff you’d never find in any store. There’s something called Ambrosia Vitae. He says one dose can push your body into overdrive and make you feel brand new.” Shirley said, struggling to cover her excitement as she settled into the VIP box Norris’s assistant had arranged.
Harriet’s face lit up at Nash’s name. “Nash really does know everything, doesn’t he? I’ve never even heard of Ambrosia Vitae and he’s already an expert. Shirley, you’d better not let this chance slip by. You have to make sure Nash becomes family.”
Shirley grinned, her voice soft, though there was something sharp in her eyes. “Don’t worry, Mom. Nash already told me he’s not marrying anyone else. Once he locks in his spot as heir, he’ll come propose. I won’t let anyone take him from me.”
Before long, the auction kicked off.
The first item was a single Rejuvenation Capsule. It looked so small, but apparently, swallowing one could make you look years younger and leave you feeling revitalized right away. No wonder all the women in the room practically lost their minds.
Sophia felt her heart race with everyone else.
She leaned closer to Paulina, whispering urgently. “Paulina, my skin’s been terrible from all these late nights. I want that Beauty Capsule so bad, but I was saving my money to buy Ambrosia Vitae for my mom. Can you spot me for this one? I swear I’ll pay you back when we get home, okay?”
