“Sophia, how can you say that to Rebecca?” Paulina’s voice was full of fake concern.
Part of her enjoyed watching Sophia scold Rebecca for her, but Rebecca had only just come back, and their parents were clearly treating her like she was the center of the universe. If this whole thing got back to them, Paulina knew she’d end up in trouble too.
She glanced over at Rebecca, trying to smooth things over. “Rebecca, I know you aren’t a fan of Sophia, but she’s already upset about not getting what she wanted. You don’t have to make her feel worse by laughing at her.”
Rebecca just stared back, completely unfazed. To her, all of this felt like pointless noise.
“I’ll laugh if I want to. Why don’t you worry about your own problems?” she shot back.
Paulina was left speechless, completely shut down.
Rebecca’s eyes moved over to Sophia. “Who was that dog barking at earlier? Just because you wag your tail for others, doesn’t mean everyone else does. Take a good look, does Paulina even appreciate what you’re doing?”
All the color drained from Paulina and Sophia’s faces.
Sophia’s anger exploded. She practically shouted, “Rebecca, who the hell do you think you are, talking to me like that? You’re just some broke nobody. The only reason Paulina’s even nice to you is because she feels sorry for you. You couldn’t even shine my shoes! I’ve never met anyone as shameless as you, lying through your teeth and having the nerve to say you can cure my mom’s cancer.”
Rebecca’s voice never changed. There was no feeling in it at all. “I can cure her. I just don’t feel like doing it anymore. You can just wait for the end.”
Sophia stared blankly, almost shaking with rage. It looked like she was about to implode.
Rebecca didn’t bother hiding her distaste at Sophia’s dumbfounded look. “You really think Ambrosia Vitae is magic for your mom? That stuff just makes healthy people feel better. It can’t bring someone back when they’re already dying.”
Buying it would be a complete waste. She could already picture them throwing a tantrum later when it didn’t work, blaming her and ruining her reputation.
Paulina jumped in, acting like Rebecca had committed a crime. “Rebecca, that’s way too much! Even if Sophia said something wrong, how can you say that about Jennifer?”
She didn’t stop there, raising her voice for good measure. “This is literally Jennifer’s only hope right now. How can you be so heartless? Are you just going to stand there and watch her die?”
