Paulina smiled, her eyes full of meaning. “That’s exactly why we can’t pin all our hopes on Harriet and Shirley.”
Sophia looked at her, surprised and a little wary. “Paulina, what are you getting at?”
Paulina waited until Sophia seemed calmer, then gently slipped her hand away. Her gaze softened, full of that warm, sisterly affection Sophia was used to.
“Sophia, you’re honestly the person who treats me best in the whole Russell family. I see you as my own sister. How could I ever let anyone take advantage of you? That check I gave them, I can make them cough it right back up.”
Sophia stared, stunned. “Don’t tell me you gave them a fake check?”
“I will,” Paulina said, her tone calm, “but the one I handed over just now was real.”
Sophia blinked, even more confused. “If you already gave them the real thing, how are you going to get away with giving them a fake one later?”
Paulina just smiled, mysterious and a little mischievous. “I never said it would happen today. Tomorrow, when Harriet and Shirley go see Mr. White, we’ll go too, and we can bring our sister along. Trust me, we’ll get our chance.”
Sophia’s eyes lit up as it all clicked into place. Paulina had been one step ahead, planning everything from the very beginning.
“Paulina, you’re a genius! Did you figure all this out back when we first brought up meeting Harriet and Shirley? Why didn’t you tell me? I was so hard on you earlier. I’m really sorry, okay? Please don’t hold it against me.”
Paulina just laughed, her smile even softer. “Why would I ever be mad at you? Seriously, it’s nothing. Let’s just head back and get some rest. Tomorrow’s going to be fun to watch.”
“Yeah, let’s go! I can’t wait,” Sophia grinned, grabbing Paulina’s hand and pulling her down the stairs, nearly bouncing in excitement.
Rebecca watched from the sidelines, one eyebrow raised. She hadn’t expected Paulina to count her in on the scheme. Clearly, Paulina was not someone to underestimate.
Odom, standing nearby, was completely floored by what he’d just heard. He was so startled it took him a second to notice Rebecca’s face growing cool and expressionless. Remembering what she’d said earlier, he instinctively shrank away a little.
