Jennifer made her move at just the right moment. If she crashed into Madonna, she could drag Rebecca down with them, and maybe even get a chance to scratch Rebecca’s face in the chaos. Even if it didn’t quite work, at least Rebecca would suffer a bit, and with Fabian’s soft personality, Jennifer figured the worst she’d get was a mild scolding. It seemed worth it.
But Rebecca picked up on her plan right away. A quick glance behind revealed a heavy rosewood coffee table, and she knew if Jennifer managed to knock her mom off balance, Madonna would get hurt for sure. Without thinking, Rebecca grabbed her mother’s hand and pulled her close. They twisted aside just in time as Jennifer lunged past.
Jennifer realized she’d missed her mark, but it was too late to stop. She did her best to avoid the solid table, but it didn’t matter. The crash was brutal.
A sharp scream cut through the room. Jennifer hit the floor, writhing in agony.
“Mom!”
Sophia’s heart just about stopped as she watched her mother slam into the table. She ran over to help her up, but when she got close, blood was already dripping down between Jennifer’s fingers. Sophia’s face went pale. She nearly threw herself to the floor to check the wound.
“Mom, where does it hurt? Where are you bleeding?”
Jennifer’s chin had smacked straight into the table, and she’d bitten her lip so badly that it was split and bleeding. The pain was overwhelming. She couldn’t say a word, just shook her head and gave a muffled groan.
Fabian, who had looked ready to scold Jennifer, went still when he saw the blood. He immediately told Egan to call the family doctor and bring the first-aid kit.
“Dad, I know how to bandage wounds. Let me help,” Paulina said, hurrying over as Egan brought the kit.
Jennifer reluctantly moved her hand away, revealing a face smeared with red. The sight was so shocking that even Madonna took a step back, fear still lingering in her eyes. If Rebecca hadn’t pulled her out of the way, she knew she would have been the one lying there, blood all over her face.
“Rebecca! My mom is your aunt. How could you let her get hurt like this? And she’s really sick! Can’t you see this could make it worse? What if something happens to her? Aren’t you afraid of consequences?” Sophia’s voice shook with anger.
