But this time, Madonna was having none of it. “Last time, she called Rebecca a brat. You told me it was out of concern for you, so I let it slide. You really think that excuse is going to work again?”
She turned to glare at Jennifer. “I’ve let you get away with too much. I’m telling you now, I’m done. As long as I’m here, you’re not stepping foot in the Russells’ house again. Don’t even think about getting a penny from us.”
Jennifer’s face went pale. Her mouth hurt so much she could barely speak. She looked desperately at Fabian, hoping for help. “Fabian, I’m your only sister. You promised you’d always be there for me, even after I got married. You said this would always be my home, that I could come back anytime. Now Madonna wants to kick me out. Are you going to let her?”
Fabian was still recovering from the earlier chaos, only now able to breathe easy after making sure Madonna was okay. But his face was hard to read. “Jennifer, I did say those things. But I also told you to respect Madonna and treat Rebecca well.”
He looked over at Rebecca before going on. “Rebecca is my daughter. She spent years out there, all alone. Now, after everything, she’s finally back with her family. I won’t let her be treated badly. If you can’t accept her, then maybe you shouldn’t come back either.”
Jennifer was stunned. For as long as she could remember, Fabian had always taken her side. Now, he was actually shutting her out. The Adams family had some status, but they couldn’t hold a candle to the Russells’ wealth or power. If anyone found out she wasn’t welcome in the Russells’ house, she would barely get to speak up in her own home.
No, this couldn’t happen. She absolutely couldn’t let it happen.
Paulina noticed how shaken she was. She took a fresh disinfectant wipe and dabbed gently at Jennifer’s mouth. “Jennifer, you’re still not well. Don’t work yourself up. You’ll only make things worse for yourself.”
Hearing that, Jennifer’s eyes flickered.
All at once, her expression twisted in pain. She clutched her chest and suddenly crumpled to the floor.
“Mom!”
Sophia nearly burst into tears. She would have, if Paulina hadn’t squeezed her hand tightly. After a moment, Sophia blinked and managed to hold it together.
