Paulina was already in a sour mood, watching Madonna treat Rebecca like something priceless and delicate. When Rebecca turned down her offer without a hint of gratitude, it only made Paulina more irritated.
“Rebecca, you really shouldn’t take Vantage Point University’s exams lightly. Besides, you just got back to the Russells. Maybe you don’t realize it, but our family has a long tradition of scientists who made major contributions to their fields, so education means everything to us. If people find out you dropped out of some no-name school, it won’t just be embarrassing for you. Mom and Dad will end up being laughed at too.”
Rebecca paused her game, her eyes cool and uninterested as she glanced over. “I told you, I’ll pass.”
For some reason, Madonna just believed her. She always had this quiet, unshakeable faith in Rebecca, as if whatever Rebecca promised was already as good as done. That level of trust was something she didn’t have for anyone else.
“Paulina, let it go. This is Rebecca’s decision,” Madonna cut in gently.
Paulina looked even more frustrated. She really didn’t get why everyone else was being so stubborn about this.
“Mom, Vantage Point isn’t some run-of-the-mill college. I had to give it everything I had just to get in. Rebecca’s been out of school for ages, plus her basics are shaky. It’s not just about the entrance exam. She probably wouldn’t even keep up in a prep class. You can’t afford to be that naive!”
Before Madonna could reply, Rebecca set her phone down.
“Why do you talk so much? Seriously, if you’re this bored, maybe go get a job instead of using your standards to judge me.”
Paulina pressed her lips together, holding back her temper. Trying to sound soft and considerate, she said, “Look, Rebecca, I know you don’t want my help and you still hold a grudge about what happened before. But this time, I really am thinking about you. I just don’t want you to hit a wall later. We’re family, you know. Can’t you give me another chance?”
Rebecca didn’t even blink. “Thanks for the concern. Just don’t worry about me in the future, okay? Now, unless you have something important to say, please stand somewhere else. The fake sweet act is messing up my phone signal.”
Paulina was left speechless, feelings of anger simmering just below the surface.
She wanted nothing more than to wring Rebecca’s neck right then and there.
Suddenly, Egan’s voice called from outside. “Madonna, there’s a package here! It’s from Vantage Point University!”
A big smile spread over Irvin’s face. “Really? Let me have a look.”
Everyone seemed ecstatic, but not a single person mentioned how all this was really thanks to Paulina. She forced a smile, trying to remind them, “Honestly, I didn’t expect the teacher to move so fast. He said it’d be a couple more days, but I guess he rushed it for us.”
Irvin glanced her way, warm but a little surprised. “So Paulina helped out with this?”
Madonna didn’t question her story and nodded. “Yes, Paulina contacted the teacher as soon as Rebecca got back, so the letter came extra quickly. Really, we have Paulina to thank.”
Irvin offered a few words of praise for Paulina, and she stood off to the side, her smile bright and sweet. Rebecca, however, easily spotted Wade’s personal seal right there on the letter, and honestly, Paulina’s eagerness to take credit was almost embarrassing.
She was about to say something when Irvin suddenly noticed that something didn’t add up.
