"I swear, you’re doing this on purpose. Don’t think making Paulina apologize to you in front of everyone means you’re off the hook for the fitness test. This isn’t over yet. Just wait."
Rebecca rolled her eyes. "Who said I was dodging the test? If you’re that determined to invent a story, at least make it believable. Now tell me what the test is." She couldn’t help but let out a quiet, amused laugh.
She kept her tone casual. "It’s just a fitness test, right? Fine, I’m in. Tell me. What do I have to do?"
One of the boys got nudged to the front. Clearing his throat, he tried to sound tough. "Glad you came to your senses. The test is a long run. As long as you finish 3.1 miles in under 30 minutes, you pass."
"How much?" Rebecca wanted to make sure she heard that right.
Seriously, 5k in 30 minutes? That counted as a test? She’d run longer distances on a tighter clock than that.
The boy must’ve thought he’d scared her. His face darkened. "That’s already a lower bar because of Paulina. Don’t push it."
The others started piling on.
"Exactly. Just accept it. Thirty minutes for 5k is already super easy. If you can’t finish, you might as well pack up and leave before you embarrass yourself."
"My little sister is in high school and she can do it. You’re not telling me you can’t keep up with a high schooler, right?"
"Stop wasting time already. Let’s go."
Truth was, Vantage Point University had a few choices for the fitness assessment. Freshmen were supposed to pick which one they wanted. The 5k run? That was the hardest one, and hardly anyone chose it.
"You’ve got to be kidding me. Did I just hear her say 5k in 12 minutes? Paulina, your cousin’s got a major ego."
"Ego? More like a death wish! The school record is just over 13 minutes, and that was set by Neely, our track star. He’s been training forever. Who does she think she is, running her mouth like that?"
"Seriously girl, if you’re going to make stuff up, at least try to sound believable. You’ve got no muscle and literally zero signs of training. You’re half my size and you want us to believe that? My sides hurt from laughing!"
"Paulina, see for yourself. It’s not that we don’t want to help, but your cousin’s acting way too full of herself. She doesn’t need any special treatment."
"Guess we’ll just give her what she wants. If she can do 5k in 12 minutes, great. If not, she needs to get out of the prep program and go back where she came from. No excuses."
Paulina could barely contain her grin. She hadn’t even lifted a finger, and already Rebecca was racing headfirst into trouble.
