To keep up appearances, she turned to Irvin and put on a helpless look. “Irvin, what Rebecca’s saying is way too reckless. Maybe you can talk her out of it?”
Irvin was taken aback by Rebecca’s bold promise too, but when he looked at her, all he saw was quiet confidence—maybe even a bit of excitement. Suddenly, this didn’t seem as impossible as everyone thought. Maybe she really could pull it off.
He paused for a few seconds, setting aside his doubts. “I believe in Rebecca. Maybe she’ll even surprise us,” he said smoothly.
Paulina had expected him to scold Rebecca for showing off, so his answer left her speechless.
Irvin was always the careful one. Since when did he buy into Rebecca’s bravado?
She managed to swallow her annoyance and forced a smile. “Well, if you have faith in her, I guess there’s nothing else I can say.”
Her little group of devoted fans caught on and immediately egged Rebecca on, telling her to get started already.
Rebecca didn’t blink. “What’s the hurry? I have a condition.”
“What condition?” someone called out.
Someone else piped up with a mocking laugh. “Don’t tell me you’re backing out now. Can’t stand the heat?”
Rebecca brushed them off, replying coolly, “Here’s my deal—if I finish five kilometers in under twelve minutes, you and you are going to run five kilometers on the track every single day this semester, until you beat my record.”
She pointed into the crowd, right at Paulina’s loyal follower and the boy who had been pushed out earlier to mess with her.
Both of them froze, their faces souring.
They were a little on guard but still didn’t think Rebecca could actually do it.
“Some people really love talking big even when they know they’re not up to it. Honestly, If you manage it, I’ll eat my words,” Una snapped, unable to help herself.
The boy jumped in, snickering, “Forget writing my name backward. If you actually do it, I’ll post a public apology on the campus forum—and pin it for a week.”
“A freshman... challenging me?” Neely was honestly surprised.
He’d been at Vantage Point for two years, broke record after record, and nobody ever dared challenge him in front of everyone before.
“Yeah, and apparently she’s a girl—super pretty too. Are you coming or not? If you’re not going, I’m heading over right now or there’s not going to be a single good spot left to watch,” Mike pressed.
Neely wasn’t really interested at first, but out of nowhere Rebecca’s face flickered through his mind, sharp and unforgettable. He stiffened—could it actually be her?
Suddenly, he didn’t care about training anymore. He unwound the boxing wraps from his hands. “Let’s go.”

Meanwhile, Wade was waiting by the battered old van, but the person he was looking for still hadn’t shown up. His mood plummeted so fast it was obvious to everyone.
Ablitt and the assistants walking with him barely dared to breathe.
