When they passed the field, Wade couldn’t help but notice how it was packed with students. Clearly annoyed and looking for somewhere to vent, he jumped at the chance to take it out on Ablitt.
“It’s literally the first day back, and the students are already crowding the sports field. Is this really how you run the place when I’m not here?” he snapped.
Ablitt looked completely caught off guard. “No, Wade, it’s not like that. The students put this together themselves. Remember how you always say we need to respect their choices? I can’t just step in every time they try to start something.”
“So you can’t even step in?” Wade scoffed, shaking his head. “What if they’re all out here plotting against me? You’d just stand back and watch? Maybe I need someone else running this place.”
“Wade! Please, don’t get upset.” Ablitt was getting desperate now. “I’ll go find out what’s going on, right now.”
He bolted across the field, only to hurry back less than a minute later, nearly out of breath. “Wade, I asked around. There’s a new student who wants to break the school’s five kilometer run record. That’s why everyone’s here— they’re excited to see if she can do it.”
Wade’s eyebrows drew together. He scanned the crowd for a moment and then suddenly stopped, eyes fixed on something in the distance. Ablitt was about to ask what was wrong when Wade set off without a word. Ablitt had to scurry behind to keep up.
Once they reached the edge of the crowd, Ablitt quickly had his assistants ask people to give way, creating a little path for them. “Please, Wade, this way.”
Wade gave him a brief look, the irritation in his face fading just a bit.
A student recognized Ablitt as they passed, eyes flicking curiously to Wade. “Hey, Mr. Ablitt, who’s that with you?”
Ablitt smiled at the group. “Everyone—this is our president, Wade.”
As soon as he said it, the students straightened and greeted him properly. “Good afternoon, President Wade.”
But Wade was still peering over their heads, searching for someone, and responded with just a small nod.
A couple of students exchanged glances. They knew they’d seen him before, but it took them a few beats to figure out where.
