“What?” Lily’s voice shot up without warning, sharp enough to make everyone flinch.
It wasn’t just her. Even Paulina and Magee stared at Rebecca with pure disbelief.
Everyone had already thought it was outrageous for a total unknown like her to get into Apex Academy. But now they found out she’d been placed in Class A, the one everyone dreamed of, where all the top talents ended up? That was on another level.
“Rebecca, you’re incredible!” Neely finally managed, shocked but with no trace of doubt.
Odom was practically a legend for being the smartest one in his family, but even he was just following Rebecca’s lead. There was more to this girl than anyone realized.
Who would’ve guessed he could suck up like that? Rebecca looked almost amused.
She just shrugged it off. “It’s nothing, really.”
Her laid-back attitude hit Neely and the others hard. The students who had been quietly gossiping suddenly crowded at the door, everyone wanting a good look at the girl who somehow convinced the school to bend its own rules.
Paulina noticed more and more eyes turning toward them. She held herself back, refusing to act as outraged as Lily. “Rebecca,” she said, reaching out as if to guide her somewhere private.
Rebecca wasn’t having it. She slipped out of reach, avoiding Paulina’s hand without a second thought.
Paulina’s arm froze midair. The sweet, gentle look on her face darkened for an instant, but she quickly forced a patient, slightly helpless smile.
“Rebecca, you don’t have to make up stories just to get back at Lily. The program I recommended you for was the regular prep course. You dropped out of some random school and barely attended classes. Even if you did get into Class A, you wouldn’t be able to keep up.”
She hesitated for a moment, then continued. “You probably got into Apex by mistake. Just apologize to Lily now, and I’ll bring you to reset your access pass. If you drag this out, you’ll only make yourself late for class.”
No one came. The silence only made Rebecca’s smirk grow colder.
Fuming, Lily charged in herself, reaching out to grab Rebecca and throw her outside.
“Rebecca, watch out!” Neely called, trying to get between them.
But Rebecca thought he was only getting in her way. She gently pushed him aside, not bothering with explanations.
Neely stopped, looking completely frustrated, but he wasn’t brave enough to protest.
Rebecca stepped around Lily, quick and graceful. In the blink of an eye, her slim fingers tapped Lily’s forearm twice, so fast it barely registered.
