Chapter 19

Compared to Mars Wright’s fury, Autumn Lopez’s attitude was exceptionally cold.

Mars had, little by little, worn away every last bit of affection Autumn had for him with his actions. Now, no matter how much of a fit he threw, he couldn’t get the slightest emotional reaction out of her.

“Are you deaf? I want my phone back. Is that a problem?”

“You-“Mars felt as if a bucket of ice water had been dumped over his head, extinguishing his rage completely and leaving only smoldering embers.

His eyes filled with confusion. “Autumn, what the hell is your problem?”

As far as Mars was concerned, everything that had happened before was Autumn’s own fault. He had only done what he felt was necessary

It wasn’t a big deal at all.

Why was she suddenly acting like a completely different person?

“I get it. You’re still mad about me locking you in the bathroom last night, right?”

“You know, you’re getting more and more ungrateful. Do you have any idea why I locked you in there? If you hadn’t gone. after Lydia first, why would I have locked you up to cool off?”

“You’re a grown woman. How can you not understand something so simple?”

“All of our friends were there, and Lydia is just a young girl. If you, as her older sister, didn’t get taught a lesson, do you really think you could have gotten out of there without a huge scene?”

“Autumn, the company is in real trouble, and we really need you right now. I’m begging you, can you please stop fighting

with me?”

“How about this? As long as you agree to come help, I’ll give you whatever you want. How does that sound?”

Autumn’s first instinct was to tell Mars he was full of shit.

Last night wasn’t her fault at all. She’d told them she didn’t push Lydia, but no one there believed her.

Not only was Mars so biased it was ridiculous, but he refused to admit it and was now trying to turn it all around on her.

His behavior wasn’t just scummy; it was utterly disgusting.

But after hearing his last sentence, the words on the tip of Autumn’s tongue took a detour. “You’ll give me whatever I

want?”

Mars blurted out instinctively, “Of course!”

He regretted it the second the words left his mouth and quickly tried to backtrack. “As long as you don’t ask for

something too crazy, like telling me not to see Lydia anymore. I will absolutely never agree to that.”

Autumn let out a sneer. ‘Don’t worry, I wouldn’t dream of making a request like that.”

Right now, she’d love nothing more than for that scumbag and his tramp, Lydia and Mars, to be shackled together for life.

God forbid they get back on the market and ruin anyone else.

“I want the Eastville project.”

Hearing her dare to ask for something so big, Mars grew impatient again. “What Eastville project? The company has so many projects, how am I supposed to know which one? Ugh, whatever, if you want it, it’s yours. Fine. Stop thinking about that for now and get to the office. Everyone’s waiting for you.”

Autumn leaned back against her pillow, perfectly comfortable. “Can’t make it.”

“Autumn!”

Mars was so infuriated by her word

that his voice cracked. “Are you playing me? I already promised you the Eastville

Autumn’s voice was like ice. “Who said I was playing games? I was locked in the bathroom for so long last night that the

stress nearly caused a miscarriage. Do you want me to show up at the office in a wheelchair to help you?”

Mars was silent for a long moment, then grumbled in frustration, “Why are you so fragile? Plenty of women get

pregnant. How come you’re the one in the hospital for bed rest every other day?”

Autumn snorted, not bothering to hide her contempt and anger. “Maybe it’s because other women don’t have a husband who dotes on his sister–in–law during his wife’s pregnancy, shoves his pregnant wife against a wall, and then locks her in a

bathroom.”

Mars wanted to explode, but then he remembered he had, in fact, done all of those things, and a sliver of guilt pricked his

conscience.

“Fine, fine. You rest. How soon can you come to the office to handle this?”

“The doctor said I need to be observed for three days.”

“Three days?!”

Mars gasped. “If we wait three days, the deal will be ancient history!”

Autumn said, “Then I could go get an abortion right now. I’d be out of the hospital same–day.”

“Don’t, don’t, don’t!”

Mars cared deeply about the child–his and Lydia’s–and sounded frantic. “Can you stop talking about getting an abortion

all the time? What kind of mother are you?”

“Fine. You focus on your recovery. I’ll figure out a way to stall for a while longer. Just remember to come to the office

when you’re better.”

With that, as if terrified of what other shocking things Autumn might say, Mars hung up the phone.

Autumn calmly sent a text, telling Mars to have a courier bring her phone over Then she set the phone aside and began to carefully plan her next steps

The top executives at Cloudbreak Corporation were not optimistic about the Eastville project.

She had championed it against everyone’s advice, but because of opposition from the higher ups, the project had nezer

been launched.

Since they didn’t want it, she could swoop in and pick up the pieces.

When the project was first proposed, Autumn had led the research tear She knew there was a very high probability that the land in Eastville would be acquired by the city.

Once acquired, the city would have to compensate them with a project of equal or even greater value.

And if they could establish a connection with the city government, they could secure official support

The Lopez Group was an established, old–school enterprise that had maintained decent relations with the government in

the past.

If she could convey her desire to revitalize a legacy company, she would definitely make a good impression on the city

officials

Then she wouldn’t have to worry so much about the Lopez Group’s future.

The only things she lacked now were time, money, and talent.

Owen Bennett had already provided two of those three things; she couldn’t chamelessly go back and ask him for more

help

This race against time was something she had to win on her own.
