Chapter 228
Autumn watched Nina clinging to her arm, a sudden flashback hitting her: Lydia, doing the exact same thing.
Before their falling out, she and Lydia had actually shared a period of what seemed like sisterly bliss. Autumn knew she had used Lydia, and because of that, she felt indebted to her. While she couldn’t grant her every whim, she was always exceptionally tolerant.
So, whenever Autumn agreed to one of Lydia’s requests, Lydia would wrap her arms around Autumn’s and act
all cute.
At the time, Autumn had been deeply moved. It made her feel needed.
Like she was finally part of the family, not just some overlooked outsider.
But something always felt… off.
She tried to convince herself that she had enough, that she couldn’t afford to be greedy.
It wasn’t until seeing Nina now that Autumn finally understood what genuine, trusting affection looked like.
The contrast made it painfully obvious just how t
o’ake Lydia’s cutesy act had been.
She probably even laughed behind her back, calling her an idiot who would bend over backward for just a little bit of kindness.
“Hey, you okay?” Nina asked, noticing Autumn’s silence. She looked helplessly at Owen. “Owen, did I say something wrong?”
Owen gave Autumn a deep, knowing look, his eyes filled with a hint of compassion.
He ruffled Nina’s hair and smiled. “She’s not that petty. She’s just not used to people being so friendly right off
the bat.”
Nina’s shoulders sagged with relief. “Oh, so that’s all it was!”
“Please don’t be mad, it’s just a habit from studying abroad… I’ll be more careful next time.”
She sheepishly pulled her hand back, rubbing her nose in embarrassment.
Autumn immediately snapped out of it and took Nina’s hand, smiling. “It’s okay. I really like you.”
“You’re beautiful and have a great personality. Thank you for liking me.”
“I’m actually really happy that you want to be close. I don’t have many friends, so you should come hang out with me sometime.”
Nina’s face instantly lit up. “Really?”

Autumn nodded earnestly. “Of course.”
“But… maybe you could just call me by my name? Your cousin and aren’t married yet, and it might sound a little weird to other people.”
Nina waved it off. “It’s just a matter of time, anyway.”
Seeing Autumn blush, she immediately understood the real reason and grinned knowingly. “Okay, okay, I get it. I’ll call you Autumn from now on, how’s that?”
Autumn nodded. “And I’ll call you Nina.”
“Deal! Oh, by the way, Autumn, are you heading to work? Can I tag along and see? I need to find an internship now that I’m back, but I have no idea where to start. It’s stressing me out. I thought maybe I could get some inspiration watching you.”
Autumn agreed without hesitation. “Sure.”
She looked at Owen. “What about

“Oh, just go already!” Nina said. “Autumn and I will be

go shopping after we eat. What are you gonna do, tag along?re a guy, you don’t know anything about
this stuff.”
Owen shot Nina a meaningful look. “Are you sure about that?”
He pulled a black card from his pocket.
Nina’s eyes lit up instantly. “You’re coming! You have to come! You’re my favorite cousin, how could we possibly eat without you? We wouldn’t dare take a bite until you arrive!”
Pfft-
Autumn had never seen such a hilarious pair of cousins. She couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
Seeing Autumn laugh, Nina grinned and leaned in. “Right, Autumn?”
Autumn met her smiling eyes and hummed in agreement. “You’re absolutely right.”
Nina lifted her chin at Owen. “See? Autumn completely agrees with me.”
Owen looked at the two women in front of him with an indulgent gaze. “Alright, I get it. Just text me when
you’re about to finish up.”
Autumn agreed, and only then did Owen finally leave, looking back every few steps.
It was the first time Nina had ever seen her cousin act like this. Suppressing a mischievous smile, she said,

Charter 228
“Hey, Mrs. Bennett–to–be, wanna make a bet?”
Autumn raised an eyebrow. Too curious about why Nina suddenly wanted to make a bet, she didn’t bother to
correct the new title.
“What kind of bet?”
Nina leaned in and whispered in Autumn’s ear, “I bet my cousin calls you back over here any second now.”
“Huh?”
Before Autumn could even process that, Owen called out from a short distance away, “Oh, Autumn! I have something to tell you. Can you come here for a second?”
Autumn’s eyes went wide. She stared at Nina in utter disbelief.
“How…”
Nina burst out laughing.
“Go on, Mrs. Bennett–to–be! My cousin just can’t bear to part with you. I’ll wait for you inside. Hurry back, and don’t take too long!”
With that, she darted into the building.
Autumn stood there, stunned for a good moment, completely baffled as to how Nina could have predicted
that.
Unable to figure it out, she decided to just let it go. She walked briskly over to Owen and looked up at him. “What’s up?”
Owen suddenly leaned down and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek.
“Forgot this.”
Looking a little shy, he opened his car door and got in. “Remember to text me.”
