Chapter 246
Autumn’s attempt to change the subject was incredibly awkward. Owen noticed
but didn’t call her out on it, playing along with her question. “We’re digging in our heels and refusing to settle.”
“Hailey tried to put up a fight at first, but I guess she realized the penalty for
slander wasn’t that bad, so she just caved and confessed.”
Autumn narrowed her eyes. That didn’t sound like the Hailey she remembered.
“Is it really because she’s not afraid of the consequences?”
Owen and Nina both turned to look at Autumn in unison.
Nina asked, confused, “Autumn, what do you mean by that?”
“Don’t tell me she’s pulling some other stunt?”
But Owen just smiled knowingly, his eyes filled with obvious admiration for
Autumn.
Autumn had only been probing, but Owen’s reaction told her she was onto
something.
“It’s just… I feel like a girl like Hailey, who relies on others, wouldn’t want this kind of stain on her record.”
“Especially since she got busted doing someone else’s dirty work. It’s unlikely she’d just willingly take the fall. For her to agree so quickly, either someone paid
her off, or she has a new plan.”
“We all saw how Ava acted. She washed her hands of the whole thing and threw all the blame on Hailey. It’s obvious she has no intention of keeping Hailey around,
so she definitely wouldn’t have given Hailey a payoff.”
“She’s so arrogant, she probably assumes that even without her help, Hailey would meekly take all the blame just to stay in her good graces or keep depending on

her.”
“So that leaves only one possibility–Hailey found a new target?”
Nina’s head snapped toward Owen. “Owen, is Autumn right?”
Owen smiled and nodded. “Spot on.”
“Whoa!” Nina exclaimed, her eyes lighting up. “Autumn, you’re a genius! A regular Sherlock Holmes! It’s a crime you’re not a detective!”
Autumn was just going to laugh off the joke, but to her surprise, Owen corrected his sister in all seriousness. “It’s called reading people, and your sister–in–law is a natural. She should be a therapist.”
Nina thought for a moment, then gave Owen a thumbs–up. “You really know her
best, Owen!”
Seeing the siblings ganging up on her, Autumn’s face flushed red. “Alright, you two, stop teasing me.”
Owen saw that even her ears had turned pink. “We’re being sincere,” he said gently.
Autumn shot him a playful glare. “Well, you can’t just keep praising me all the
time.”
Owen happily obliged. “Then I’ll praise you again next time.”
Autumn was speechless. “…”
Nina burst out laughing.
Realizing she was no match for the two of them, Autumn decided to drop it.
Sensing this, Owen switched to a topic he knew would interest her. “You’ll never
guess what Hailey’s escape plan is.”
Autumn met Owen’s eyes, thought for a moment, and said, “Don’t tell me she’s set
her sights on Marcus Henderson?”

Nina: “???”
Owen paused, then let out a helpless laugh.
“Autumn, I am so glad you’re about to be my wife and not my opponent.”
For Autumn, that was the highest form of praise.
But right now, neither Nina nor Autumn could focus on that.
“Seriously, Owen? Hailey and Marcus Henderson? But… the age gap is huge!”
If Marcus Henderson had kids a little earlier, he could literally be Hailey’s father.
How could Hailey even stomach that?
“It’s perfectly normal.”
Owen, on the other hand, was unfazed.
“Guys like that are a dime a dozen in our circle.”
Who doesn’t like someone young and beautiful?
Owen himself knew of quite a few May–December romances.
And that didn’t even count the men and women who were secretly having affairs.
They always went for someone younger.
After all, people like that are only seeking pleasure, so of course they wouldn’t choose someone their own age to complicate their lives.
“You sound pretty experienced, Owen.”
Without missing a beat, Nina immediately set a trap for her own brother.
“I wouldn’t call it experience.”
Owen was completely unbothered. His eyes landed on Autumn, and he frowned slightly when he saw she wasn’t angry.

“It happens a lot in our circle. You see enough of it, and you start to notice things.”
Nina chuckled. “Oh, really?”
Owen shot her a warning glance. “Sounds like you’re getting a little too
comfortable back home, huh?”
“Ahem!”
Nina immediately dropped her I’m–just–here–for–the–drama act, becoming as meek
as a mouse. “Nope, not at all! I owe my current happiness all to you, my dear brother! I’m so, so grateful!”
A small smile touched Autumn’s lips as she watched the siblings interact.
Seeing her chance, Nina quickly ducked behind Autumn. “Autumn, can you get
your man? He’s the one who brought it up, and now he’s targeting me just for asking a question. That’s not fair!”
Autumn looked up with a smile, meeting Owen’s vaguely expectant gaze.
She froze, a little confused.
What is he waiting for?
Does he want me to ask him something?
But I trust Owen. Even if every other man in their circle cheated, I’m certain Owen
never would.
So why would I need to ask?
“Alright, stop messing around, Nina. Don’t we have to go out today? Go get ready.”
Nina suddenly remembered they had plans and jumped to her feet. “Oh, right! I’ll go get ready then. Call me when you’re good to go, Autumn! I’ll drive!”
