No Reason to Be Jealous

Leo Rhodes looked up and met Owen Bennett’s eyes, which seemed to see right through everything. Not a word was spoken between the two men, but the air crackled with tension.

“Owen? What are you waiting for? Go carry Nina inside.”

Autumn Lopez was pregnant; she couldn’t possibly carry a drunk person.

Owen grunted in agreement and walked over, lifting Nina out of Leo’s car.

“Let’s go inside.”

Owen gave Leo a curt nod, a silent acknowledgment, before urging Autumn to hurry in.

“Okay.”

Autumn answered Owen, but then noticed Leo swaying on his feet. “You should hurry home and get some rest, too,” she said quickly.

Honestly, Autumn wanted to invite Leo in for something to help him sober up, but one look at Owen’s face and she decided against it.

After living with him for so long, she knew that look. He was angry.

She didn’t know why, but she still wasn’t going to do something that would deliberately upset him.

Leo quickly got into his assistant’s car and left.

Autumn stood at the door, watching the taillights disappear before turning to

check on Nina.

She’d barely turned around when she bumped right into Owen, who had come back for her.

“Haven’t had your fill of staring yet?”

His words were dripping with jealousy.

Autumn didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “He was my senior in college.”

“Oh,” Owen said. “The whole ‘senior and junior‘ thing. That’s always the shadiest kind of relationship.”

Autumn was speechless.

Too exasperated to explain, she rolled her eyes and walked past him straight into the living room.

A remedy for the hangover had already been prepared, and the maid had managed to get Nina to drink most of a bowl. Seeing that she was cooperative, they took her

to her room.

Autumn was about to follow when Owen grabbed her wrist.

“Why aren’t you saying anything? Feeling guilty?”

Autumn was completely baffled.

“Guilty of what? Can you please stop making things up?”

“Why would I be making things up?”

Owen, recalling the way the other man had looked at Autumn, had a disgruntled expression. “It was the way he looked at you. It wasn’t right. And you’re saying I’m making it up?”

Autumn froze.

She remembered how Leo had, in fact, always been especially kind to her back in the day.

After he found out she was married, he had politely kept his distance, never doing anything that could be misinterpreted.

It wasn’t until news of her divorce got out that Leo had gradually started

reappearing on her Facebook feed.

Could it be that Leo actually liked her?

“I don’t think Leo likes me.”

Autumn looked at Owen and said, word by word, “Besides, even if he does like me, that’s his business. He has never tried to make me uncomfortable, so we have no

right to speculate about his feelings.”

“At the very least, we haven’t crossed any lines.”

Autumn said this with dead seriousness. “And I would never like him.”

She had absolutely no romantic feelings for Leo. Owen’s outburst was, frankly, coming out of nowhere.

But she could understand where he was coming from, which was why she k her tone gentle.

Owen realized he had lost his composure, and his eyes filled with guilt.

“I’m sorry.”

Autumn shook her head. “While I’ll admit it’s nice to see you get jealous over me, I really don’t think there’s any reason for it this time.”

Owen clearly felt that his behavior had been a bit childish. He cleared his throat awkwardly. “I just… lost it for a second when I saw the way he was looking at you.”

“It won’t happen again.”

Autumn smiled softly and walked over to take his hand. “It’s okay. Let’s go check on Nina, and if she’s fine, we can go to bed.”

It was getting late, and Owen had to work in the morning.

Owen was deeply moved.

He’d never been in a real relationship before, and he knew he was probably messing up in a lot of ways.

He was so incredibly lucky that Autumn was such a patient person.

Anyone else would have been furious to be interrogated like that in the middle of the night.

“Autumn, I’m so glad I have you.”

Autumn squeezed his hand.

In truth, she had been a little angry when he’d first confronted her.

She and Leo hadn’t seen each other in years, and they had only exchanged a few sentences. There was nothing inappropriate about their interaction at all.

For Owen to get jealous over *that* was just unbelievable to her.

But then she thought about it again. Owen was only acting this way because he cared about her so much, and the anger quickly subsided.

For Owen, all of this was new territory. Her role was to be patient and guide him.

Even if two people were serious about being together, a relationship still required compromise, communication, and constant improvement. A happy ending wasn’t guaranteed just by two hearts wanting to be one.

Her failed marriage to Mars Wright had been a hard lesson learned.

She truly hoped that she and Owen could have their happy ending.

“Mr. Bennett, ma’am.”

The two had just reached the top of the stairs when they saw the maid coming out of Nina’s room.

“How’s Nina?”

Autumn peeked inside and saw Nina already tucked into bed, asleep. The tense look on her face finally relaxed.

“Miss Nina is fast asleep.”

The maid smiled. “We gave her the tea to sober up, and she was very

well–behaved. She really handles her liquor well.”

Autumn smiled, too. “That’s good. Please keep a close eye on her. If you hear anything tonight, check to make sure she hasn’t fallen out of bed.”

“Of course.”

“You two should get some rest. We have everything under control here.”

Autumn nodded, and she and Owen went back to their room.

Being pregnant, Autumn was asleep in no time.

Owen gazed at her sleeping face for a long while before drifting off himself.

The next morning, Nina woke up rubbing her head, only then realizing she was back at her brother and sister–in–law’s house.

She rushed to wash up and go downstairs, where she found Autumn eating

breakfast.

“Autumn, who brought me back last night? Did I come back on my own? I can’t remember a single thing.”

“Leo brought you back. He said he saw you drinking by yourself and was worried about a girl being alone like that.”

“It was Leo?”

Nina racked her brain but couldn’t recall any of the details. She smacked herself on the forehead. “Oh, I’m so screwed. So, so screwed. I got wasted in front of my boss. Is he going to think I’m a totally unreliable person now?”

“Why would he?”

Autumn handed Nina a glass of milk. “You handled it really well. You’re already

ahead of ninety–nine percent of people.”

“Oh, good.”

Nina was incredibly relieved.

If she’d made a drunken scene in her boss’s car, it would have been social suicide.

Her brand–new internship probably would have gone up in smoke.

“My brother wasn’t home yesterday, was he?”

Remembering Owen’s intimidating side, Nina asked cautiously, “Does he know I was drunk?”

Autumn just gave Nina a look that said, *You’re on your own.*

Nina was speechless.

“Is it too late for me to make a run for it?”

Before Autumn could answer, an icy voice spoke from right behind her. “It’s obviously too late.”

Nina instantly reacted like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, scampering around the room and shrieking.

Owen shot her a glare, having no intention of chasing her.

Autumn watched him calmly sit down beside her and said with a helpless sigh, “Did you really have to scare her like that?”

At the end of the day, Nina was just a young girl.

“She’s used to being reckless and assumes it’s safer here than abroad, but she never stops to think about how many people here might want to take advantage of

her.”

Nina was an heiress. There were far too many people these days looking for a

shortcut.

Even if their families had the power to get revenge for her, the damage would already be done, and it would be irreversible.

Why did she have to learn the hard way when all it took was a little caution to avoid

it?

“I guess that’s a common problem for kids from wealthy families.”

Autumn knew Owen’s concerns were valid.

But that was just human nature.

You don’t realize how serious something is until you’ve actually been through it.

“We’ll just have to keep a closer eye on her.”

After all, if something like that did happen, it would be too late for regrets.

“It’s a good thing Leo Rhodes was worried about Nina’s safety last night. He even waited outside for her and then drove her home. We really should thank him for

At her words, Owen shot Autumn a look.

“I’ll handle it.”

Autumn opened her mouth to say something but ultimately didn’t make a sound.

A jealous man was not to be trifled with, and he was even harder to soothe.

She was better off keeping quiet, or she’d be the one facing his wrath.

Once Nina was completely sober and found out Leo Rhodes had personally brought her home, she immediately tracked down Owen. She wheedled and pestered him relentlessly until she’d secured the opportunity to thank Leo herself.

“He’s my future boss, so it’s only right that I thank him. Why are you getting involved, Owen? Don’t think I don’t know your company is about to get crazy You should just focus on your work before you have no time to come home to

Autumn.”

Autumn had been listening to them bicker with a smile, but Nina’s words made her ask with curiosity, “Why is it about to get busy? Is it time for the annual party?”

Every company set its own date for their annual party, so the timing always varied. Autumn was planning to hold her company’s party at the end of the year, and they could all start their holiday break right after.

That way, everyone could enjoy the holidays properly.

Since she was pregnant, her team was holding down the fort at the company, so Autumn had already prepared generous bonuses and gifts for everyone.

“It’s the anniversary celebration,” Nina said with a mischievous grin. “The Bennett Group’s anniversary.”

It was only then that Autumn remembered. The Bennett Group was the family’s

After all, it represented the family’s prosperity and symbolized their legacy.

“That sounds like it would be a lot of fun, right?”

Autumn seemed a little wistful.

Having slaved away for Cloudbreak Corporation all these years, pouring her heart and soul into the company, she’d never actually attended an event like that.

“You wanna go, Autumn?”

Autumn looked at Owen expectantly. “Can I go?”

Before Owen could even speak, Nina exclaimed excitedly, “Autumn, what are you even saying? You’re the lady of the Bennett house! Of course you have to go.”

“Don’t worry, don’t worry, you’re definitely going!”

Autumn raised an eyebrow. “But I don’t think many people know we’re getting married…”

“What’s the big deal? In just a little while–ouch!”

A jolt of pain shot through Nina, and she couldn’t help but turn and complain, “Owen, what did you pinch me for?!”

As she spoke, her eyes met Owen’s, which were as cold as ice.

Nina sobered up instantly, the anger on her face vanishing without a trace.

“Ahem, anyway, I gotta go figure out how to thank Leo. Autumn, you two can chat.”

With that, Nina bolted like a rabbit and was gone.
