“Then I smacked myself and told myself I shouldn’t think that way. Of course you’d be fine. But that didn’t. mean I was going to let them off the hook.”

Autumn didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

“How did I never realize you were such a vindictive person?”

“You really didn’t know?” Owen asked.

Autumn paused, unable to bring herself to lie.

“Well, I might have noticed a little.”

But Owen had always done a great job of hiding that side of himself from her.

It was only much later that Autumn had figured it out.

And by that point, she had already realized she was in love with him.

“Of course I wasn’t going to let you find out right away,” Owen murmured.

“What if I’d gotten scared and run off?”

Autumn pointed at him. “Aha! So you planned this all along?”

“I wouldn’t say I planned it. It was more like perfect timing.”

“I’ve always believed you have to make your own opportunities. Since you appeared right in front of me, and the universe was so generous to give us this little treasure, I’d probably be struck by lightning if I didn’t seize

the chance.”

Autumn was amused.

“Owen, have I ever told you that I really like you, too?”

“Nope.”

Owen replied without a second’s thought. “Why don’t you say it a few more times for me?”

“Wait.”

He hastily pulled his phone out of his pocket.

Autumn watched his series of movements–somehow both frantic and smooth–and raised an eyebrow. “What are you doing?”

“I’m going to record it. Even better, I’ll make it my ringtone. That way, I can hear you confessing to me anytime I want.”

An image flashed in Autumn’s mind: Owen in a meeting, and suddenly her voice echoing, “Owen, I like you so much!” She cringed at the thought.

“Do we have to?”

*If anyone heard that, how could we ever show our faces in public again?*

“Why not? I think it’s a great idea.”

Owen held his phone’s microphone up to her lips. “Come on, just say a few words for me.”

Autumn couldn’t bring herself to do it and tried to change the subject. “Where did Nina go? I still have some things I want to talk to her about. You guys didn’t blame her for what happened when I fainted, did you? It was my idea to go with her because I was being nosy. Please don’t give her a hard time.”

Owen waited quietly for her to finish before speaking. “Anything else you want to ask?”

Autumn bit her lip and shook her head. “No, that’s it.”

Owen nodded and pushed the phone toward her again. “Alright then. Let’s go.”

Autumn was speechless.

Seeing her back off, Margaret herself took Nina’s spot. “Well, let me have a listen then.”

“Auntie, you tricked me!”

Margaret chuckled. “How is this tricking you? Oh wow, you can hear much more clearly from here! Too bad we can’t see what’s happening. Our Owen is finally having one of those epic, ‘marriage–of–convenience–turns–to–real–love‘ romances. As his mom, I’m seriously so stoked.”

“And Autumn is so gentle, beautiful, and capable! Owen really married up! When he wins, we all win!”

Listening to her aunt’s rambling, Nina rolled her eyes, exasperated.

“Auntie, my cousin is the one getting a wife, you know? You want him to marry into her family?”

“If that’s what Autumn wants, I don’t mind.”

“Besides, it doesn’t matter whose last name the baby has, as long as it’s a Bennett baby.”

Nina had never met such an open–minded mother–in–law. She couldn’t help but give her aunt a thumbs–up.

“You’re one of a kind.”

She really was something else. Having been in the entertainment industry, her ability to accept things was way stronger than most people’s.

“But Auntie, should we tell my sister–in–law about Robert Williams and the others being back in the country?”

“I think she’s pretty smart. It’s not like she won’t figure it out if we don’t tell her. What if Robert actually goes after her and she’s completely clueless and unprepared? Wouldn’t that be even more dangerous?”
