Nina covered Autumn’s eyes.

Before Autumn could even guess what was happening, the smell of blood, carried by the wind, filled her nose.

Horrifying images flashed through her mind. A spasm shot through Autumn’s stomach, and she began to tremble uncontrollably.

“Retch-”

Autumn had been perfectly healthy throughout her pregnancy, but at that moment, it was like something broke open in her throat, and she started to dry–heave violently.

“Autumn!”

Autumn slumped into Nina’s arms. Luckily, the two bodyguards, Ella Miller and Grace Wright, were right there. The three of them quickly got Autumn away from the scene.

Out of the corner of her eye, Autumn glimpsed a familiar figure brandishing a knife like a madman. The blood on its tip was a startling, piercing red…

Autumn felt like she’d been asleep for a very long time.

She even had the urge to fast–forward.

A chorus of voices surrounded her, but Autumn immediately singled out Owen’s.

She turned her head and saw him sitting by her hospital bed, his face pale. He was gripping her hand tightly,

and the dark circles under his eyes were stark and jarring.

Before she could finish her question, a strange smell flooded her senses. Autumn’s expression changed, and

she gagged.

“Quick, bring that stuff over here.”

Margaret Bennett’s voice was frantic, but every word was crystal clear.

Autumn hadn’t yet figured out what “stuff” she was talking about when an assortment of bizarre–smelling

foods was presented to her.

“What… is this?”

Autumn stared at the items in disbelief.

Her nose was filled with a mix of stinky, sour, and an indescribable odor that was vaguely like stinky feet.

Margaret Bennett said, “These things can help with your morning sickness. Autumn, dear, try smelling them and see if any of them make you feel better.”

*Which one would feel better?*

Autumn froze for a second, then slowly realized that once the smells had filled the air, the urge to throw up

had actually vanished.

“I think… it’s actually working when they’re all mixed together.”

“Then mix them together!”

Margaret Bennett ordered, “Quick, have the staff work overtime and make me a sachet with this exact scent!”

Owen’s assistant immediately acknowledged the order and left.

Autumn was completely stunned by Margaret’s command.

“This seems a little…”

“Oh, come on, Autumn, don’t worry about it. You fainting earlier scared the hell out of me. I was ready to grovel for your forgiveness.”

“Auntie knows what she’s doing. We should listen to her. You just play along, okay?”

Seeing this, Nina and Margaret exchanged a look, shared a knowing smile, and tacitly left the room.

In an instant, only Autumn and Owen were left in the hospital room.

“Owen?”

When Owen didn’t answer, Autumn started to sit up, but he pulled her into a hug.

His movement was sudden, but Autumn’s body was already used to his closeness, so she settled into his embrace without resisting.

Knowing how scared he must have been, Autumn’s eyes filled with guilt. “I’m sorry.”

She couldn’t even imagine how frantic Owen must have been when he heard she had fainted.

The thought made Autumn suddenly anxious. “Did you drive here yourself?”

“Did anything happen? Are you okay?”

Owen caught her frantic hands, his voice raspy. “Julian drove me.”

“Don’t worry.”

Only then did Autumn let out a sigh of relief.

“Good. As long as you’re okay.”

“Sorry, I just went with Nina to see what all the commotion was about. I never thought…”

Recalling the scene still made Autumn feel uneasy.

But thankfully, the nausea had subsided, so her reaction wasn’t as intense as before.

“Autumn, I know that me hiring bodyguards for you has made you anxious, too.”

Since Owen had brought it all out into the open, he saw no reason to hide anything anymore.

He filled her in on the rest of the story he hadn’t finished before.

“The reason Robert was sent abroad in the first place was because he started showing aggressive

tendencies.”

“When his family went bankrupt, some were arrested, others passed away… The old man was desperate. He

wanted to preserve the last of the family line, so he pulled a lot of strings behind the scenes. Luckily, there

were no actual victims back then, just people who Robert had scared, so the matter was resolved quietly.”

“After Robert was sent abroad, he got even worse. But the Bennett family couldn’t control him anymore, so we just quietly distanced ourselves from him.”

“What did he do?”

Owen’s expression flickered with a complex emotion before he said gravely, “He was living a wild life

overseas, had a lot of girlfriends. One of them got pregnant, and… Robert beat her until she miscarried.”

“Later, when she was completely heartbroken, he went and begged her for forgiveness on his knees, claiming

he just couldn’t handle having a child. She had a soft heart and forgave him.”
