Chapter 107

Hayley touched the electric kettle. The glass surface was still warm.

Beside it sat a half-eaten cup of instant noodles, stuffed with ham, jerky, and all kinds of seasoning packets. It looked like whoever had been here was waiting for the water to boil to make their noodles.

Only now, the whole thing had gone bad. Even the highly preserved ham and jerky were moldy and spoiled, the stench filling the air.

Whoever was about to eat that cup never even got a single bite. 1

Hayley found it oddly unsettling, as if the people here had just vanished into thin air.

She scanned the room and spotted a few computers. Maybe she could dig up some information.

But unlike the open doors, every single computer was locked tight behind a high-level security password. After a few minutes, she realized she wasn’t getting anything useful out of them.

Instead, she started searching the rest of the office and ended up finding a stash of supplies: instant noodles, canned ham, and jerky.

No way was she leaving empty-handed!

Keeping to her frugal habits, Hayley packed up everything edible she could find, slipping it into her bag. Of course, she actually stored it in her inventory, but she was pretending to pack it by hand just so Leonard wouldn’t notice.

When Leonard tried to help, she told him to search the next room instead.

A short while later, they had cleared out everything worth taking from the entire floor.

Leonard came back carrying two full bags, his shoulders bulging under the weight, with two crates of soda tucked under his arm. He really was taking the job seriously.

Hayley looked at the big guy and said, “Let’s head down first and drop off the supplies.”

“Yes, Boss!”

This time, Hayley didn’t bother with the stairs. The building still had its own power supply, and the elevator was working. She pressed the down button on the top floor. After a few seconds, the elevator started moving.

She and Leonard exchanged a quick look and stood on opposite sides of the door, ready for anything.

They had already checked the upper floors, but elevators always needed caution.

The bell chimed when the elevator arrived.

Ding!

The doors opened.

It was empty.

That confirmed it. There really wasn’t a single person or zombie on the upper levels of this facility. Once they were sure it was safe, Hayley and Leonard entered the elevator with their dogs. There were seven buttons inside. Just as Hayley had guessed, there were six floors above ground and one

basement level. She had already seen the sign for the underground parking garage earlier.

Her plan was simple: head down to the first floor, drop off their supplies, and then clear out the basement. Once they swept through the underground level, the entire research facility would officially be hers.

Hayley reached out to press the button for the first floor, but her hand froze halfway.

Wait a second.

Something clicked in her mind.

This was the United Pharma Research Facility in the western part of Aecraton. The name of the company wasn’ what caught her off guard; it was the location. This place sat right at the border of Aecraton, Brookville, and Crestford.

Her eyes widened.
