Chapter 117

Nadia’s men were practically dying of envy.
Nadia, however, looked anything but impressed. Her face twisted as she glared across the room at Hayley, grinding her teeth in frustration.
She felt that it wasn’t fair. How the hell was Hayley eating so well when she couldn’t even get a proper meal herself? What kind of justice was that?
She turned toward Liam, and a sudden thought struck her.
“Captain Caldwell, since your people aren’t eating the food from our base, then tell them to give if back! We can’t afford to waste Ki’s supplies.”
Liam gave her a cold look. “The rations were distributed per person. Whether they eat them or not is their choice. Whatever’s
left over is still theirs to use.”
Nadia’s face flushed red with anger. She cursed Liam inwardly for always siding with outsiders.
If it weren’t for his grandfather, who used to command the northern military before the apocalypse and rivaled her father in power, she would’ve made him pay for that attitude long ago.

Nadia tore into her rough white bread, chewing a few bites before losing her appetite. Even the few pieces of meat she had secretly stashed in her meal now looked unappetizing. Compared to the feast Hayley was having next to her, hers might as well have been prison food.
She decided she wasn’t eating anymore.
“Who’s that woman?” Hayley asked casually as she ate, watching Nadia from across the room.
Derek and the others were halfway through their bowls when they heard her question. They immediately leaned closer, eager to gossip.
“Her name’s Nadia Barnes,” Derek said quietly. “Before the world went to hell, her dad was a big-time politician. Now, he’s one of the administrators at Base Ki.”
“She’s an inventory-variant Gifted?” Hayley asked.
Everyone nodded.
That wasn’t exactly a secret.

In fact, Nadia liked to brag about being the only inventory-variant Gifted in K1. Her father’s position was practically secured because of her ability.
“Then why didn’t you have her store your stuff when the elevator was overloaded earlier?” Hayley asked.
“Her inventory’s tiny,” Ethan replied. “She can only hold about 35 cubic feet of supplies.”
Hayley nodded in understanding.
Inventory-variant Gifteds were rare, and leveling up their ability was notoriously difficult. Still, they were incredibly useful, as they were basically walking storage units.
They brought Nadia along, even if she didn’t seem helpful in combat.
That meant…
“You guys came here to find something, didn’t you?” Hayley asked with a sly smile.
“How did you know that?!” Derek blurted out.

The moment the words left his mouth, he realized he had just been tricked.
Hayley was incredibly smart
Her grin widened, showing her teeth. She reached over and ruffled Derek’s head roughly. “Good boy. Now tell me what you’re looking for, and I’ll share some of my meat with you.”
Derek froze.
Right now, Hayley felt like some kind of big bad wolf from fairy tales trying to fure kids with food.
He shook his head like crazy.
The others quickly clammed up as well.
As soldiers, they had their principles. Even if they were eating Hayley’s food, orders were orders. They couldn’t reveal confidential information.
“Fine,” Hayley said, dropping the subject. “I’ll find out sooner or later anyway.”
