The deal was sealed. Hayley came back and swiped the card. The heavy metal door slowly creaked open

She stood steadily behind Liam, her eyes locked on the room ahead.

The inside was pitch black, with not a single light on. The hallway light spilled in just enough to reveal a small steel-walled waiting room.

In the center of the room stood a large pane of glass. The lighting wasn’t strong enough to see through clearly, but it looked like there was a much bigger area beyond it.

It was completely silent. Yet, in that dark, sealed room, Hayley could feel an invisible pressure pressing down on her, like something unknown was hiding inside.

Hayley was a mental-variant Gifted. Her ability was very special. When she focused, she could sense zombies or other Gifted nearby. She also had an almost supernatural instinct for danger.

Coming down to B2 and walking through the zombie-filled corridors earlier hadn’t triggered any alarm in her mind. But the moment this door opened, her pulse suddenly raced as a wave of suffocating pressure rolled toward her.

Hayley tried to extend her mental energy into the room, but the walls must’ve been somehow radiation-shielded or reinforced. Her power couldn’t penetrate it at all.

At her current level, she couldn’t even get through an inch of it.

The only thing she could sense was danger. Intense, crushing danger.

Hayley stopped at the doorway, refusing to move any further.

Nadia noticed and frowned. “Weren’t you the one insisting on going in?”

“It feels fishy. I don’t think it’s a good idea now.”

Nadia’s face twisted with mockery. “Hah, you’re just a coward! Fine, stay here. Captain Caldwell, let’s go!”

She strode forward toward the darkness.

Liam, however, stopped and turned to Hayley. “You’re saying there’s danger inside?”

ľ

Hayley looked at him with a half-smile and held out her hand. “One hundred crystal cores, and I’ll give you an important hint.

Liam stared into her eyes for ten long seconds. Then, almost like he’d lost his mind, he pulled out a small bag-

“I only have 78.”

Hayley snatched it from him. “That’s good enough. I’ll give you a discount. Better to have you alive than see all this go to waste.

Liam just stared at her, speechless. Was he supposed to thank her or something?

“What’s in there, then?” he asked.

“No clue. I just know it’s very dangerous.”

Liam blinked slowly.

So… Had he basically paid 78 crystal cores for nothing?

From inside, Nadia’s impatient voice echoed out. “Captain Caldwell! What are you waiting for? There’s no danger here! Get in here and help me already!”

Liam said nothing more. He raised his weapon and stepped in.

As he brushed past Hayley, she tightened her grip on the bag of cores and told him seriously, “Remember, it’s very dangerous in there.”

Liam gave her a long, deep look before heading inside alone.

This was the mission’s core area. No one else was allowed in.

The moment he disappeared through the door, Hayley pulled out the access card.

“Leonard, get the dogs and supplies loaded up. Park the truck right outside the entrance.”

“On it.” 1
