The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 120

Chapter 130

Beyond the glass pane was a pile of mangled corpses, stacked and scattered across the room.

None of the bodies was intact. Some had nothing left but bare leg bones, some had hollowed-out stomachs, and some were missing half their heads.

The walls of the quarantine room were smeared with dark, dried blood. Everything inside looked like the aftermath of a massacre straight out of a horror movie.

But what made their blood run cold was what they saw in the corner.

It was a small child.

“Look!” Derek shouted, pointing toward the far end of the room.

A little girl, about six years old, was curled in the arms of a female corpse. She was nudging at the corpse as if it were her mother, as if she just wanted a hug.

Then, the child turned her head toward them.

Everyone’s breath caught at once.

It wasn’t the face of a sweet little girl, but one straight out of a nightmare.

Her skin was blackened and bruised, her once innocent eyes now pale gray and hollow. The small white dress she wore was soaked in blood. In one hand, she clutched a broken doll. When she sensed movement beyond the glass, she tilted her head and

stared right at them.

The zombie child’s mouth opened. Dark, tar-like blood oozed down her chin. A chunk of decayed flesh slipped from the corner of her lips and hit the floor with a wet sound.

She had been feeding on the corpse!

Before Derek and the others could recover from the shock of seeing a child zombie, things got worse.

From among the scattered bodies, they saw movement. One, two, three…twelve, thirteen.

Over a dozen child zombies began crawling out from the pile, all of them staring directly at the humans outside.

Hayley’s eyes darkened instantly.

She knew something most people didn’t.

Child zombies were far more dangerous than adult ones.

A child’s body retained its flexibility and speed after mutation, and once turned, they were fiercer and far more aggressive. Their evolution rate was also much higher than the average zombie. That made them stronger, faster, and much harder to kill.

Thud!

Thud!

Thud, thud, thud!

The child zombies lunged at the glass wall, slamming into it again and again.

Each impact left spiderweb cracks spreading across the supposedly reinforced barrier, which was far stronger than the glass in

other rooms.

Suddenly, a sharp scream pierced the air.

“Ahlih!”

It was Nadia.

The noise attracted all the child zombies; they turned away from the observation window and rushed toward it.

Gunfire followed. Short, frantic bursts echoed through the chamber.
