Chapter 131
Chapter 131
Later on, the disaster seemed to spread across several bases, wiping out a number of smaller bases entirely.
Hayley’s first step in making her move was to use what she remembered from her previous life and get ahead of everyone else. She would claim this place for herself.
She drove to the area, guided purely by memory.
To her surprise, the sharp crack of gunfire greeted her just as her vehicle rolled in.
Bang!
A burst of bullets shot across the road, tearing toward the front of a livestock plant. A small group of seven or eight people was
attacking from the gate.
It looked like someone had gotten here first.
The problem was that they were a bunch of rookies. The whole group had only two pistols between them, and their aim was so bad that they hadn’t hit a thing even after several shots.
Hayley focused, using her mental energy to read the situation.
There were seven of them in total, five men and two women. Only one was a fire-element Gifted. Two others had enhanced
strength, while the rest were ordinary people.
The pistols were in the hands of the strong types. The rest carried clubs, pipes, and machetes, sticking close behind their Gifted teammates with obvious tension.
But Hayley’s attention was drawn to the man at the back, who wore a baseball cap. He didn’t carry any visible energy signature, but something about him felt different. He wasn’t quite human, but not quite Gifted either.
After a few minutes of ineffective shooting, they seemed to realize things weren’t going their way. Then, one of them noticed Hayley’s armored vehicle approaching.
“Curtis, look over there!”
“There’s a car coming!”
“An armored one!”
“It’s gotta be people!”
The man in charge, Curtis Black, glanced toward Hayley’s vehicle. He told his team to fall back.
“Stay put. I’ll check it out.”
Curtis strode toward the vehicle. To show he meant no harm, he stopped about 30 feet away, waved a hand, and removed the
magazine from his gun right in front of Hayley.
Hayley nodded to Leonard, who flashed the headlights twice.
Seeing that, Curtis walked closer.
Even in the apocalypse, there were unspoken rules Within a few feet, everyone was a potential enemy. Any stranger could be a threat, and no one could afford to trust too easily
Curtis decided to make a friendly gesture first
Knock, knock.
He tapped on Hayley’s window.
Chapter 121
Hayley rolled it down just a quarter of the way. The armored vehicle stood taller than the man, putting her in a solid defensive position. If he tried anything, he would be the one at a disadvantage, and Hayley would be able to take him down easily.
She could still hear him clearly.
“Hey,” Curtis said. “You here to collect supplies too?”
“Yeah.”
