The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 14

Chapter 14

Hayley didn’t even spare the young man a glance and just kept running.

“Honey, why the hell would you ask her for help? She’s killing people-so many people! We should call the cops and have her arrested!”

“Shut up!” the man barked.

Seeing Hayley slipping down a narrow alley without even looking back, he grabbed the woman’s hand and hustled her after him.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

After clearing five zombies, Hayley finally got out of the hospital area.

She was in a small alley through a residential neighborhood. Most people were still trapped inside their homes, so there wasn’t a huge outbreak here yet.

Hayley stuck to the greenbelt and other empty areas, stepping over or smashing any stray garbage-collector zombies or morning-run zombies with a single swing of her shovel.

She kept her eyes peeled for a vehicle.

But luck wasn’t on her side-she hadn’t seen a single one.

And behind her, two stragglers had attached themselves.

“Honey, this road’s impossible. I can’t run in heels!” the woman whined.

“Then get lost!” the man snapped, running out of patience.

The woman’s face instantly filled with hurt. She tried to charm her way into sympathy with a soft, “Honey…”

What she got in reply was, “What the hell am I doing with a useless idiot like you? You can’t do anything, and you just slow me down! If you wanna die, don’t drag me down with you! Get lost!”

The woman froze, biting her lip. She glanced at Hayley with the shovel and the man running ahead of her, and didn’t say another word. Limping in her heels, she followed

Hayley slashed through the side of the greenbelt, moving fast. Finally, she spotted an open delivery truck parked outside a convenience store.

A car!

If she didn’t find one soon, she’d have to break into a dealership and steal one.

Without hesitation, she sprinted for the truck. The man and woman scrambled after her.

When Hayley reached it, her heart lifted-the keys were still in the ignition, the doors were wide open, and no one was inside.

She glanced at the convenience store behind her.

It was empty, too. No one in sight, just blood splattered across the front counter. Someone here had turned and cleared the place.

Hayley took the keys. Following her usual rule of never leaving anything behind, she ran into the store to grab whatever supplies she could.

She knew that spending just another 30 seconds now to clear the store would save her hours, maybe days, of work
