Chapter 15

Hayley knew the two stragglers were still on her tail. As she headed toward the truck, she pretended to be carrying two jugs of mineral water, acting like she was just picking up supplies.
“Hey! You didn’t pay! And you just took all the stuff-what are we supposed to eat now?” the woman shouted, clearly not happy.
Her words only earned her boyfriend’s one-line response. “Are you crazy?!”
After yelling at her, he tried to catch up to Hayley.
“Miss, can you take me with you? Just get me to the Westside Mansion. I’ll pay you a million!”
Hayley climbed into the truck and slammed the door. This time, she actually had a little fun replying, “Do you really think money matters right now?”
The man’s face went pale.
It didn’t. Not one bit.
He could only watch as Hayley drove the delivery truck away.
“Honey, she’s ignoring you! She won’t even listen to anything you say. We should call the cops!”
“Idiot! Do you think cops or money matter right now?!” the man yelled.
Over 40 minutes later, Hayley had successfully driven out of the city and onto the open roads in the suburbs. The farther she got from the city, the fewer zombies and mutated creatures appeared. The outskirts still seemed untouched-for now.
Screech!
Hayley parked the truck in front of her warehouse.
“Woof! Woof! Woof!”
Summer immediately sensed her arrival and barked excitedly.
Hayley knelt to rub its head. “Good job.”
She led Summer to the huge pile of supplies she had collected yesterday from the farmers’ market and the supermarket. With a wave of her hand, everything slid into her inventory.
Her inventory could hold the chickens, ducks, and lambs she had purchased yesterday. Thinking about it, she tried to fit Summer in, too.
But…
“Woof! Woof!”
No luck.
She realized the system could only store low-intelligence creatures with food attributes. Dogs? Out. Humans? Definitely out.
Hayley didn’t mind. The system was a bonus, not a crutch.er real power came from herself.

them too much, and if the system failed, she’d be finished.
Once the warehouse was empty, Hayley closed the doors and took Summer straight to her fallout shelter-her apocalypse-safe haven.
An hour later, Hayley collapsed onto the super-soft cloud sofa she had looted from the mall.
She popped open a soda, heated up the steak and fresh shrimp she had packed from yesterday’s Michelin-star restaurant in the microwave, and settled in with Summer.
