The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 141

Hayley’s mental energy could now stretch about 60 feet, covering roughly a quarter of the massive supermarket in front of her.

There were indeed no signs of any living humans or zombies.

Hayley, Griffin, and the two dogs edged further inside, starting with the cash registers, clearing everything off the counters.

Griffin said to Hayley, “By the way, I see you brought one teammate. What about your family?”

“They’re all dead,” Hayley replied casually.

The Reids weren’t really her family anymore. Even if they had somehow escaped the hospital, they wouldn’t have lasted long without her protection. No one else in this life could shield them the way she could.

“And your family?” Hayley asked.

“All dead, too,” Griffin said with a slight smile, though there was a hint of cold cruelty in it.

Meanwhile, Hayley noticed something as she finished gathering gum and candy from the first set of registers.

Boxes of chocolate and high-calorie candies were all empty.

At that moment, one of the dogs barked loudly from the deep darkness.

“Woof, woof!”

“Woof, woof, woof!”

Hayley swung her flashlight toward the sound and caught a fleeting shadow moving across the aisles.

Even though her mental energy couldn’t reach that far, she could tell that it was human, not zombie.

A zombie would have charged at them long ago.

“There’s someone here,” Griffin said.

Hayley immediately pulled an AK from her inventory.

Since Griffin knew she had inventory, she didn’t bother hiding it. She raised the rifle and, with Griffin and the dog, moved

toward the shadow.

As she advanced, she noticed the food aisles were almost completely empty.

Someone had definitely been living here.

By the time Hayley reached the back of the supermarket, her mental energy picked up clear details inside the employee area

“Seven people,” she murmured. “Male and female, old and young. Not a single Gifted among them.”

As soon as she spoke, seven people spilled out of the staff area.

“You came to save us!” one exclaimed.

Among them were two fourteen year old twin boys, three elderly people with gray hair, a young pregnant woman, and a single middle-aged man who seemed to be the only one physically capable of labor

The man stood behind the older, weaker, and pregnant people, acting like a quiet tollower rather than a leader

Hayley thought the group was strange. In an apocalypse, for a mix of old and young to survive like this was tare

“Why did it take you so long? Take us out now!” the eldest elderly woman demanded, glaring at Hayley as it she were a soldier giving orders.

Her tone was grating. She was acting as if Hayley were a servant.

Before Hayley could get annoyed, another voice rang out.

“Grandma! Look who’s with her

“It’s the homewrecker’s kid!” shouted one of the teenage boys.

“It’s him! How is he still alive? What is he doing here?” another boy yelled.

“Grandma, chase him away! I hate seeing him! I feel sick even looking at him!”

Instantly, all eyes turned to Griffin, standing in the shadows behind Hayley.

Griffin acted like he had run into someone familiar. He lowered his head and smiled.

“Captain Gorgeous, why don’t you go check the second floor for supplies? I know these people, and I want to handle them first.”

Hayley met Griffin’s one-eyed gaze and gave him a nod of acknowledgment, showing him respect.

The moment she started to leave the elderly woman who had been speaking stepped in front of her.

“Where do you think you’re going? You can’t leave. Is this man really your teammate? How did you find that useless scum? Get rid of him now! I’m telling you, the biggest real estate in Aecraton belongs to us, the Cooks. My youngest son is the deputy governor of Brookville. Take us out and find them, and I guarantee you’ll be rewarded!”

“Grandma, I just want to go out! I want fried chicken. I don’t want to be stuck in this place!”

“Me too! I want to play games. I haven’t logged in for ages. Can you tell her to charge my phone first?”

“Alright, alright,” the old lady soothed her two precious grandsons, then turned back to Hayley. “You hear me? Start the arrangements, and don’t let my grandsons suffer. Of course, start by getting rid of this disgusting pest! We don’t deal with trash like that.”

Griffin, listening to the bickering, lowered his cap over his face. The cruel smile on his lips only grew sharper.

Then came the sound of a gun being chambered.

In the dim light, Griffin stared in disbelief as Hayley raised the black muzzle of a gun, pressing it against the old lady’s mouth.

A cold, lazy female voice rang out.

“Who did you just call a useless scum, huh? How dare you insult someone on my team!”

Hayley acted like a thug. In fact, that was exactly what she was! She was lawless, rebellious, selfish, and ruthless, but also
