Chapter 144
Chapter 144
Hayley said nothing. She watched Griffin calmly and gave him a thumbs-up with her eyes.
“Yeah, I haven’t. You’ve had it rough,” she said.
Griffin laughed until he started to cough.
“That’s nothing. At least I had food.
“I’ll tell you a secret. When I was a kid, I cried a lot. Crying worked; my dad would give me money. Too bad I didn’t get to cry for long before my dad died.
“He was killed in a car crash. After that, no one gave my mom money. She dragged me around, begging at the Cooks’ place every day. If they wouldn’t give her money, she would just leave me there.
“Back then, my dad’s wife was pregnant with twin boys through IVF. My mom was stupid to think I’d be useful. When she realized I was completely useless, she threw me away. How old was I then? Oh, right. Ten.”
Griffin took a deep drag from his cigarette and exhaled a thick cloud of smoke. Staring at the woman running outside, he went on talking.
“I was standing alone in front of the Cooks’ place. I was starving. I hadn’t eaten in days.
“When I wouldn’t stop crying from hunger, those two gave me a bowl of dog food.
“The Cooks had a dog. They scraped up what was left of its meal and handed it to me to eat. Hahaha…”
Hayley stayed silent. She watched the pregnant woman and the man run off around a corner and vanish. She thought she heard screams and crying in the distance, but it was too far to be sure.
Griffin finished his story and exhaled smoke.
Hayley lowered her head and took a deep breath. “It’s all in the past. This is a new era now.”
Griffin laughed, low and wild.
“Yeah. When the apocalypse hit, I was so happy I could’ve gone insane. Let everyone die. How great would that be!”
Hayley finally understood why this guy caused chaos in his past life. He really wanted everyone gone.
She thought for a long time. In the end, she could only come up with one piece of cheesy encouragement.
“Kid, after the storm comes a rainbow. Life still has hope. Join ine, and I’ll be your family. I’ll be the loving family you never had.
Griffin was silent.
Hayley felt proud of herself. She figured that speech should have moved him. Maybe his loyalty meter would go up
She stared seriously into his eyes.
Griffin looked down and snickered “Let me ask you something”
“Go ahead.”
“If you really see me as family, why do you always keep your guard up around me?”
“Who says I’m guarding against you?” Hayley shot back coldly
Suddenly, Griffin leaned in close to her face in an instant
Chapter 144
Bang!
A single kick sent him flying
Griffin landed ten feet away, clutching his stomach. “So much for not guarding against me.”
Hayley was speechless.
