Chapter 150
A base was a gathering point for survivors, a place where people trapped in areas overrun by zombies banded together to survive. They formed bases of all sizes, from tiny outposts to larger strongholds.
From Hayley’s past memories, there were about 30 bases across the Eastern region.
Of course, most of them were small and fragile, unable to withstand real disasters. Over the ten years of the apocalypse, they gradually disappeared, swallowed up by the chaos.
By the time the massive zombie waves hit, only three major bases remained in the Eastern region: Base K1, Hope Base, and the Firebrand Base, which was farther west, almost reaching the central region.
Base Ki had been famous in Hayley’s past life because its origin was tied to the military. Its powerful armed forces allowed Base K1 to attract a huge number of survivors early on.
But that was also a problem. Base K1 simply couldn’t support that many people, especially compared to the two neighboring big bases. 1
Hope Base only accepted capable survivors. Early on, they recruited a lot of scientific talent. With fewer residents but higher quality, Hope Base managed fairly well during the apocalypse.
The Firebrand Base, on the other hand, suffered from extreme resource shortages. Yet its leader was ruthless, ranked among the top ten toughest people in the apocalypse.
He killed zombies outside the base and his own people inside. When resources ran critically low, he would cull the population to keep the base at a manageable level.
His cruelty was extreme, but the Firebrand Base was resilient, never experiencing internal revolts or uprisings.
During the apocalypse, humans were often more dangerous than zombies, especially when resources ran low. People would act like wild animals just to survive.
Base K1 experienced countless internal uprisings. Luckily, its initial military strength allowed it to suppress the riots.
But Base K1’s leadership had problems. They never fully addressed the mobs inside, almost as if they wanted these rioters and the military to keep each other in check, keeping the leadership firmly in place.
“So, what happened after the previous mission?” Hayley asked Derek from the car.
“Everything went well. It was considered a successful mission!” Derek’s face lit up with pride.
“But Nadia died. Isn’t her dad a director at the base?” Hayley asked, curious.
At that moment, their vehicle approached a main road that led to a massive tunnel. Countless protective fences lined the tunnel entrance. A group of guards stood watch.
Cars were parked neatly along the sides of the mountain road, while incoming survivors queued in temporary tents built outside the mountainside.
Hayley immediately recognized the procedure. They were screening people for zombie infection. Anyone showing signs of mutation while waiting would be shot on the spot. Every survivor had to be isolated for 24 hours and registered before entering
Base K1.
They had arrived at Base Ki.
