“Captain Caldwell, how do you usually hafidle stuff like that in your base?” Hayley asked.
“The internal management isn’t really my business,” Liam said, “but if someone dies, the killer dies, too.”
Hayley couldn’t help but laugh.
Karma sure had a funny way of circling back.
In this apocalypse, everything was scarce, especially medical resources. Bernard and Eleanor, already riddled with problem: had little chance of surviving after being beaten like that.
Hayley hadn’t expected this ending for them. They were killed and abandoned by the sort and grandson whom they had spo their whole lives.
Their whole family was tied together in one cruel cycle.
It was truly poetic justice.
Being the “good person” she was, Hayley couldn’t stand by.
She said firmly, “Captain Caldwell, you’d better catch those two people fast. Look at these two. They definitely won’t last lon You need to lock them up together now. If something happens later, at least the victims get justice. You can’t wait and risk no being able to catch them later. That wouldn’t be fair to the victims.”
Liam nodded, seeing her point. “Put the attackers in the victims‘ room. If the victims die, the attackers get an immediate dea
sentence.”
“Yes, sir!”
Hayley felt a deep sense of satisfaction after “standing up for the victims“. She truly believed she was the kindest, most mere! person around.
Anyone else in this situation would probably have turned a blind eye or even kicked someone while they were down
But not her! She was actively helping deliver justice.
She was basically Mother Teresa.
Her own good–heartedness made her almost emotional. If anyone ever safe she wasn’t a good person again, she would be the first to disagree.
After walking through the marketplace, Hayley had a clear understanding of Base KL
The whole place was a mess.
If it weren’t for the military guarding the base, the system would have collapsed long ago.
They absorbed refugees in massive, uncontrolled waves Resources inside were extremely scare, and many residency were able because jobs were rare.
If the soldiers hadn’t been constantly scavenging for supplies, this place would have fallest apart
Bottom line, the base simply didn’t have enough resources
No wonder Liam was so focused on reaching that distant supply warehouse
“Ms. Reid, we’ll leave early tomorrow morning Get a good test,” Liam said
“Okay,” she replied 1
He settled her into an empty room in his villa, with Leonard next dour.
As Hayley was about to close the door, Liam stopped her.
“Oh, I noticed you didn’t eat much tonight. There are some snacks and cookies in the awer in your room. Help yourself if you get hungry.”
“Got it.”
Hayley closed the door. Sure enough, inside the drawer was a box of fancy cookies.
Not bad. Definitely better than nothing. Next time, she could return the favor.
The next morning, Hayley woke early after sleeping at Liam’s villa. She went downstairs and saw the convoy lined up outside
Besides a few pickups, there were dozens of massive trucks.
