Chapter 160
Scarlett looked at the cashews Hayley offered, hesitated for a moment, then shook her head.
“No, thanks. Our base has over 200 people. They’re all from Eagleton and nearby villages.”
Hayley started munching on the cashews herself. “What’s the age distribution like?”
Scarlett frowned. “Eagleton has a lot of older folks. You know how it is in the countryside. Mostly, the elderly stay behind. Young people like me and my brother are less than 50,”
Hayley chuckled, keeping her mouth busy. “No wonder your brother is so desperate to cozy up to a strong ally. Wait too long, and he won’t even get scraps.”
Scarlett blinked, speechless for a moment.
After a brief pause, she shook her head firmly. “No. In my opinion, you can’t rely on anyone. In this apocalypse, we can only rely on ourselves!”
Hayley giggled as she popped another cashew in her mouth and held out the bag. “Here, eat. I like listening to you talk.”
Scarlett muttered, “Never heard that before. No one’s really liked listening to me my whole life.”
“I do. Keep talking. Consider these cashews your payment.”
Scarlett looked at the caramel-coated nuts and hesitated for a second, then took a handful.
“Alright… Since the apocalypse started, I haven’t really talked to anyone either. I like you, too. Anyway, did you, really build a base?”
“Yeah.”
“Why would they pick you as the base leader? Do they even listen to you?”
“They’re all people I saved. Of course, they listen to me.”
Scarlett’s eyes went wide. “No way!”
“Don’t believe me? Ask Leonard. I saved him, too.” Hayley smirked.
Scarlett glanced at Leonard, who had been standing silently beside Hayley the entire time like a living backdrop, always watching over her.
Leonard looked at Scarlett once and nodded slightly, still cool and detached as he said, “My boss saved all the people in our base.”
Scarlett drew a sharp breath, utterly impressed.
Hayley had really saved everyone by herself. She must be really strong!
Scarlett knew how low the status of women was in this apocalypse.
Even as a fire-element Gifted with combat skills equal to Malcom, she couldn’t make decisions in base
management.
People naturally ignored her. Some even said women should stay home, have kids, and obey men. Gifted or not, women couldn’t compete. Men were supposed to rule.

Scarlett had wanted to tear apart anyone who said that.
In Ember Base, she had it relatively good because Malcom was a base manager, and she had a gift. Other women without gifts had even lower status.
