Chapter 164
With so many people gathered in one place, they had drawn every zombie within miles.
Liam could tell the horde was far worse than he had expected.
Without hesitation, he shouted, “Everyone, hold for five minutes!”
As soon as the words left his mouth, he and all of Base K1 bolted out through an opening in the back line.
The four smaller bases tensed up instantly.
Five minutes? Were the K1 guys ditching them?!
But no one dared chase after them. They had no choice but to grit their teeth and defend their own sections of the convoy.
Five minutes. They just had to survive five minutes.
Wave after wave of zombies crashed in. All four bases fought desperately. Meanwhile, Hope Base stayed perfectly still; not a single person from there stepped out of their cars.
By the three-minute mark, the Gifted from the four small bases were already at their limit.
Some were completely drained, while some could no longer muster any ability at all. One by one, they dropped their powers and switched to melee weapons.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
Shovels, hammers, wooden sticks, machetes… Anything that could smash a skull was in use.
Everyone swung with everything they had, but even then, their defensive circle shrank inch by inch.
They had to hold the line no matter what.
At four and a half minutes, every group had been pushed all the way back to their vehicles.
There was nowhere left to retreat. One more step, and they’d have to run.
Scarlett stood behind Malcolm, backing up toward their truck one step at a time.
“Scarlett, get in the car first!”
“No!”
“You’re out of energy already! I don’t need a woman with nothing left to fight with! Get inside!” Malcolm roared.
Scarlett was struggling to form one last fire orb, but the power slipped right out of her grasp.
At that moment, a long-haired zombie suddenly lunged from somewhere in the dark, jaws wide open, aiming straight for her.
It happened too fast. By the time Scarlett reacted, the zombie’s rotting, pus-covered face was already inches from hers.
Its cavernone
bod open, half a rotten tongue crawling with maggots inside.
to fight back. For a split second, she felt like she should just close her eyes.

But when she braced herself for death, the bite never came.
The zombie stopped, its whole body stiffening as if some invisible force had grabbed it, locking it in place right at her throat. It couldn’t move an inch forward.
Wham!
A metal rake skewered the zombie’s skull and flung it away.
“Scarlett…!”
Malcolm’s voice was shaking as he looked at her, terrified by how close she had come.
But Scarlett wasn’t looking at him. Behind Malcolm, she saw a pair of eyes.
A beautiful girl sat calmly in her car. She had been watching them the whole time.
Just then, she smiled at Scarlett. Her eyes were so bright that they seemed to radiate a power that could draw a person in.
Right then, a fire orb shot past Malcolm’s head.
Bang!
He stared at Scarlett’s hands, where another fire orb had reformed, burning hot enough to make his heartbeat jump.
Behind him, another zombie collapsed with a gaping hole burned straight through its skull. Dark blood splattered across half his face.
A second later, a massive ring of fire ignited along the outer edge of the battlefield.
And immediately after, gunfire erupted again.
Rat-tat-tat!
Base Ki was back!
They had poured gasoline around the perimeter, creating a burning barrier that cut off the outer zombies.
Then they regrouped with the convoy, sweeping through the remaining zombies with heavy gunfire.
“Malcolm! Let’s finish this!”
“Yeah! Let’s go!”
With hope flooding back into them, Malcolm and Scarlett rallied and threw themselves back into the cleanup with everyone else.
