The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 165

Chapter 165

Scarlett lifted her cracked, pale lips and let out a raspy laugh.

As she laughed, her eyes drifted toward the car that hadn’t moved once during the whole battle.

The woman inside was no longer sitting upright. The interior was quiet, as if everyone there had gone to sleep Scarlett’s gaze darkened.

Had she imagined it earlier? Why did that zombie stop? Was it because of Hayley?

Inside the car, Hayley yawned, rubbing her temple from overusing her mental energy before drifting into a deep sleep.

Of course, the zombie battle wasn’t without casualties.

He had just gotten married. He and his wife had been long-distance for years before finally tying the knot right before the apocalypse. Before leaving on this mission, she had cried and begged him not to go.

He told her that if he went just this once, they would have enough supplies to stay home for a long time.

He promised he’d be with her every day.

“P-Please… Please don’t… Tish, I love you so much….

Bang!

A cold single gunshot rang out.

The mutated man from Victory Base dropped to the ground, motionless.

Everyone snapped their heads toward the shooter in fury.

frozen eyes, holding a smoking gun in his hand.

Now that everything was safe, Hope Base finally bothered to come down from their vehicles.

“You’re a monster! He wasn’t a zombie yet! He wasn’t a zombie!” Victory Base’s captain, Ronald, charged forward in rage.

Before he got close, several gun barrels shoved against his forehead.

Every guard behind Alex stared at him with empty, cold eyes. If he moved even a fraction, Victory Base would be erased today.

“But he… He was still human! Why did you kill him?!” Ronald’s voice cracked as he glared at them, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles went white.

Alex didn’t show even a blink of emotion. His voice was as cold as stone. “Once he turns, we’re all in danger I do not allow unnecessary risks.”

Ronald trembled with fury.

“Teams with casualties will receive extra supplies according to the number of people lost,” Alex continued, not bothered in the slightest.

He turned and walked away without another word.

Everyone watched Hope Base as they slowly walked off.

Afterward, Liam approached Victory Base. “Need help?”

“No, thanks,” Ronald said quietly. “We all knew the risks coming out here. You fought hard.”

Each team dug graves for their fallen.

Liam had his people deliver medicine and digging tools. The others thanked him sincerely.

After this long night, Base K1 and Hope Base had taken no losses.

And Haylight Base had slept through most of it.

Once Liam made sure all other bases were settled, he assigned patrols around the safe zone, then walked toward Hayley’s car.

Leonard stepped out of the tent the moment Liam arrived.

“Captain Caldwell!”

“Hey, Leonard.” Liam nodded.

This had been one of his soldiers once.

“Where’s your boss?” Liam asked.

“She’s asleep.”

Liam blinked.

Honestly… That was fair.

He had told her not to fight. The whole point was to let her collect some supplies and repay an old debt.
