Chapter 168
Alex’s voice made everyone turn.
They watched him stride over in his spotless white uniform.
Something about hitn today felt different. His entire presence was icy and untouchably superior, as if he were looking down from a higher plane.
The smaller bases instantly felt pressure stabbing into the backs of their minds. Their heads dipped on their own/ their faces tightening in discomfort.
The only two completely unaffected were Liam and Hayley.
Hayley lazily watched Alex approach, Countless threads of mental energy radiated from the space within six feet of him, all carrying a sharp, probing intent.
A control variant was extremely strong in its own domain, but it could not identify gifts.
He could only sense whether someone had a gift, but nothing more. He couldn’t distinguish the type.
And forget comparing him to Hayley. Her mental energy was much stronger. As long as she didn’t release her energy outward, he couldn’t detect her at all.
Alex contínued sweeping the area with his ability, desperately trying to locate the powerful mental variant who had probed him earlier.
He found nothing.
Instead, Liam looked increasingly displeased. “Captain Kirk, what are you doing?”
Liam wasn’t oblivious. He simply had a strong gift. He could clearly feel Alex’s pressure digging into everyone’s
minds.
What the hell was this man doing?
Alex paused, his gaze lingering suspiciously on Liam for a moment.
He withdrew his powers a second later and said coldly, “I was thinking about what you said earlier. I don’t agree. Just because you cover for them doesn’t mean they get a free pass.”
Alex looked directly at Hayley.
His eyes were cold and completely devoid of human warmth.
“For this mission, we distribute supplies based on contributions. If you contributed nothing, you receive nothing. It doesn’t matter who brought you.”
The air froze.
Not a whisper, not a shuffle, not a breath.
Liam stepped between Alex and Hayley. “Enough. Haylight Base is merging under Base K1 for this run. We’ll split our supplies with them.”
He blocked Alex’s line of sight.
Alex’s already frigid eyes darkened even more. “Since you insist, I have nothing else to say.”
Ni
He turned and walked away with the rest of Hope Base.
Seeing that, the other bases felt the tension break and quietly dispersed as well.
Once they were gone, Liam turned to Hayley. “Don’t be upset. Everyone just…”
“No need to explait,” Hayley said. She casually patted his shoulder with a bright grin. “You brought me here to freeload anyway. Why would I be upset?”
She wasn’t some clueless girl who thought Liam owed her anything. He didn’t let her lift a finger and still let her, enjoy all the benefits. He had more than repaid his old debt.
Getting mad at him would be stupid.
But the others, especially Alex… Well, he had officially offended her.
