Chapter 184
“Don’t worry about it. I’ll walks around first. When Captain Caldwell is done, I’ll go say hello,” Hayley said.
“Alright, then I’ll go with you,” Derek offered.
“No need. Get back to whatever you were doing, I don’t need a chaperone.” Hayley waved Derek off.
She came here with a very clear goal, and she didn’t want anyone tailing her.
Derek hesitated for two seconds, then handed her an ID badge and a pager.
“This is a management badge. If anything comes up, flash it, and no one will stop you. Or use the pager to reach us. This button calls me, and this one calls our captain.”
“Okay.” Hayley pocketed everything, smiled as Derek walked off, then turned and headed straight toward Base K1’s shantytown district
This place was packed with people.
Perfect.
Of course, Hayley wasn’t planning to take just anyone. She wanted people with skills, specialties, or, if she got lucky, someone with a research background.
Just then, she noticed a commotion.
“You useless deadweights, get out! You’re slow as hell! Completely worthless!”
“Stop working! Stop working! We don’t want you here! Go somewhere else!”
“Get out!”
Up ahead, near a construction site, seven or eight thin men were being shoved out. Most looked to be in their thirties or forties, and the oldest was a gray-haired man seemingly in his sixties.
He was kicked hard by one of the workers, stumbled twice, and fell heavily to the ground. His face went pale instantly.
“Professor!”
“Professor!”
“What are you doing!”
“Professor Floyd’s an old man! How can you hit the elderly?!”
“Hah! If anyone deserves a beating, it’s you, useless pile of trash! This isn’t the world before the apocalypse. Forget respecting elders. Now it’s the apocalypse, and whoever has the bigger fist gets to talk. Today, we’re tossing all you worthless idiots out! What can you do about it?”
“Y-You people are unreasonable! You’re a bunch of animals!” the youngest of the group said angrily.
“Oh? Calling us animals? Fine! Then we’ll show you what animals look like! Go! Beat them up! Teach them a lesson! Make sure they remember it!”
A group of burly workers rushed forward.
They were all part of the base’s construction crew. The problem was, the group they were attacking couldn’t lift or carry properly and worked painfully slowly.
A full day’s labor from the crew could build nearly ten feet of defensive wall, while these men managed maybe six feet. sometimes barely five. The gap was huge.

And since Base Ki distributed work points evenly as long as people didn’t slack off, the workers felt cheated.
Today, they’d had enough. They were determined to beat these slow, weak men out of their team.
“Kick these wastes out!”
“Stop!”
Just as fists were about to crash down, a lazy female voice cut through the noise.
Everyone turned.
A girl in a fitted combat jumpsuit walked toward them, a long blade strapped across her back, high ponytail swaying with each
