Chapter 19
Back in the day, Hayley had made a name for herself in the base for being ruthless. That was how she got to the point where no one dared mess with her.
You couldn’t survive out there without being tough.
“This is my base,” she said, looking over the bunker she had built, her eyes shining.
She was determined to make it stronger and stronger and turn it into her very own steel fortress.
She glanced at the other channels. After seeing that all the signals were out and there was nothing useful on TV, she got up to reinforce her base again.
Then, she remembered-her bonus period for base upgrades wasn’t over yet.
After a full meal, Hayley took Summer over to her little garden.
She cleared out a section of land and used a bunch of branches and sticks she had collected to build a simple chicken-and-duck pen.
Once it was ready, she waved her hand. The twenty or so chickens and ducks she had bought earlier went straight inside.
She also set up a separate pen for her two little lambs. 1

Hayley’s eyes went wide.
She even watched a hen strut over and lay a steaming hot egg right in front of her.
Jackpot! Keep it going!
Next, she found a spot in the orchard, mainly near her water source and slightly lower ground, and started digging a pond.
Digging a pond was hard work. She spent the whole day digging until she had a medium-sized square pond. Once it was done, she carved a channel from her water well, and as soon as the water flowed in, the pond filled up.
She waved her hand again and dropped in fish and shrimp.
To keep the shrimp from getting eaten by the fish, she buil a divider in the middle of the pond. Fish on one side, shrimp on the other.
Ding! [Fish and shrimp pond detected. Reward: fish and shrimp’s reproductive and health stats maxed! Immune to disease!]
Hayley had been a little worried-raising fish and shrimp required some skill. She thought she might mess it up.
However, the system handled everything for her.
Having a solid system backing her up felt amazing. All she had to do was move forward, and the system took care of the rest.
Once the chickens, lambs, fish, and shrimp were settled, Hayley turned her attention back to reinforcing the base.
She had been a self-defense squad captain in her past life, so she knew a thing or two about infrastructure and security.

The basic defenses were up: high-voltage wire fences, razor wires, a big iron gate, and foundational bunker defenses.
Now, she needed some offensive measures. Big traps were out of her reach, but simple pitfall traps were doable.
Summer stayed behind to watch the house while Hayley went into the forest over 1,500 feet beyond the wire fences to set traps.
If someone wandered in, the traps would send a message, warning them to get out, fast.
