The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 206

Chapter 206

“Raarh!”

“Raarh!”

“Raarh!”

The starving zombies below snapped their jaws up at Hayley.

But the danger wasn’t just under her feet. It was also above her.

Zombies were still hurling themselves out of the sixth floor, one after another.

Just as Hayley steadied herself, one zombie dove straight toward her from above.

There was nowhere to dodge, no space left to retreat.

At that moment, with her hands tied to the cable and her body dangling in midair, Hayley was suddenly pulled against the wall and wrapped tightly in an embrace.

The falling zombie’s claws slashed across Griffin’s arm, spraying blood across Hayley’s face.

Griffin lowered his head, chin resting on top of hers. He was much taller, and his entire frame caged her in, shielding her from every angle.

Pressed against the cold wall, Hayley could feel the violent pounding of his heart against her back.

“Raarh!”

“Raarh!”

“Raarh!”

The zombies below clawed upward, desperately trying to reach her. They were only a foot away. A few had already scraped at the soles of her shoes.

Just then, Hayley’s body jerked upward.

Leonard was leaning halfway out of the sixth-floor window, veins bulging on his forehead as he hauled on the cable with both hands.

“Boss!” he called out, lifting her nearly four inches.

He was using everything he had to pull her up.

Yet, the zombies below roared louder.

The mass at the bottom swelled, and the zombies still hanging from the lower end of the cable were dragged upward by

Leonard’s effort.

That single motion made the horde beneath them explode with excitement.

One after another, zombies climbed over the bodies of others, stacking themselves into a rising wall of claws.

With only about 16 inches between them and Hayley, they would grab her easily.

“Leonard! Stop pulling!” Hayley shouted, twisting her head out of Griffin’s hold for a moment.

She took one look at the growing wall of undead, and her voice turned sharp.

“Go get the car!”

First, Leonard would never be able to pull her and Griffin all the way to the sixth floor.

Second, even if he was superhunan, there was no time.

They needed the armored truck now.

Leonard hesitated for half a second, his jaw clenched hard. Then, he yanked the cable again, raising her another two inches before tying the cable off to the concrete wall.

He dashed downstairs. “Boss, wait for me!”

With no one pulling, Hayley was once again hanging against the wall, zombies screeching below her and the occasional corpse falling from above.

Just then, a lazy voice rang out in her ear. “Having fun?”

Hayley rolled her eyes. “Shut up!”

“Well, I’m having fun,” Griffin said, his voice bubbling with amusement above her. “Don’t you think this is exciting?”

Hayley wanted to facepalm herself.
