The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 214

Chapter 21%

But Hayley never passed up adace she could scavenge.

Even if it was just a public restroom, she’d still go in and walk out with twe packs of toret paper.

Hayley crossed the road with Summer trotting beside her. She was halfway across when she heard a loud crash from the diner. The front door swung open.

A man stumbled out, practically rolling across the dirt as he scrambled backward.

He wore a gray button-down and thick glasses. He was crawling for his life. 1

Right in front of him was a zombie that had to be at least 70 years old. It only had half a torse left, and it was growling as it gnawed after him.

The man didn’t attack at all. He only kept retreating.

From inside, someone shouted.

“Just kill it already! That zombie is easy to take down!”

“N-No! I can’t do it!”

“You useless idiot!” the voice snapped.

A second man burst out from the hallway. He carried a huge hiking pack and looked completely disgusted.

“I swear, why did I even partner with someone as useless as you? Just drop dead already!”

He turned and bolted. But before he could sprint away, another zombie lunged out of the dark room behind him.

Just when it was about to tackle him, Hayley saw something flash like a spark.

The next second, the yelling man was knocked aside.

The man in the gray shirt had somehow dived past the attacking zombie with speed that didn’t match his appearance and dragged his friend out of its path.

Thud!

Both men hit the ground at the same time.

And right behind them, the zombie slammed into the dirt, too.

“You okay?”

The man who had been saved jolted from terror into shaky relief. Then he glanced at the zombie still moving on the ground. His eyes narrowed with zero gratitude.

He shoved the man who saved him straight toward the zombie.

“Move!”

Then, he turned and ran.

The man in the gray shirt clearly didn’t expect that. He stumbled backward with no way to regain balance, falling straight toward the snapping zombie.

Right when the zombie was about to bite him…

“Woof, woof, woof!”

“Wout!”

A big black dug vaulted over bin like a shadow. With one swipe of its claws, the frail elderly zombie’s head burst open.

Black blood sprayed across the man’s face.

He heard a heavy thump as the zombie’s head hit the ground

“Hey. You okay?” Hayley asked.

His eyelids fluttered. He opened his eyes, his vision magnified behind absurdly thick lenses.

A girl stood above him, the sunlight behind her. She had her arms crossed, her expression cool and unimpressed.

It had been a long time since he had seen someone this clean and this pretty in the apocalypse.

“Hello? Are you dead?”

“I’m not!” the man said quickly.

He spun around to check behind him. Both elderly zombies lay decapitated.

Seeing the corpses, he turned back to Hayley and bowed his head politely.

“Thank you for saving me.”

“Sure.” Hayley gave a lazy reply.

She knew exactly who he was.
