Chapter 213

When Hayley said that, all the residents cheered with excitement.

Everyone worked even harder after that.

Right now, Hayley’s territory had a total of 46 residents. Other than Cyril’s research team, everyone else participated in production.

Production was the number one priority.

In the apocalypse, the reason every base struggled was simple: nobody could get production running.

Production was key to surviving long-term. The earlier a base could start producing food, the more state it would be.

But in reality, almost none of the big bases could do it.

First, during the early months of the apocalypse, zombies were everywhere. Most bases were hastily built in remote or protected areas far from population centers. That meant their farmland was tiny.

And with waves of survivors pouring in, they barely had enough land to stand on, let alone farm.

Besides, everyone was too busy fighting zombies to even think about planting anything.

The second problem was that extreme weather was coming.

Next year would be the start of three straight years of harsh climate.

In her last life, Hayley survived ten years in the apocalypse. Those ten years didn’t just teach her how to fight zombies; they taught her how the entire world changed.

Compared to everyone else, she had ten years of foresight. She knew what was coming long before anyone else could.

During those three brutal winters, almost every base failed to grow anything. They completely missed the only peaceful window where they could have rebuilt their food supply.

When things finally calmed down enough for them to attempt large-scale farming again, they discovered something even worse: the zombies had evolved.

Hordes poured out of the cities, wave after wave, crashing into every base

At that point, nobody had the time or manpower to farm. Even if they wanted to start production, they no longer had the buffer period needed to get it running.

So every base spent years in constant shortages, barely scraping by.

Hayley stood looking over her developing territory. She refused to walk the same doomed path as everyone else.

Before the extreme weather arrived, she would turn Haylight Base into a fortress.

She wanted endless output of meat, vegetables, grains, fish, and poultry, with stable, reliable resources. And she would build the strongest defenses possible.

Even if the zombies evolved again, she wouldn’t be afraid.

“Long live Ms. Reid!”

“Long live Ms. Reid!”

“Long live Ms. Reid!”

After inspecting the territory and helping assemble a few of the greenhouse frames, Hayley returned to her shelter.

For the last couple of days, she had Leonard helping the residents pift up greenhouses while she expanded the borders of her

land.

She pushed the boundary outward, claiming every empty area in the suburbs.

That way, whenever a zombie horde appeared, her radar would pick it up instantly and trigger an automatic response.

“Summer, Ace, Spade, Flush, Straight, let’s go!”

Hayley grabbed Summer and four of the dogs, then headed out solo.

A heavily armored truck sped down the road.

Hayley kept expanding her territory the same way she always did. She sent the dogs out to run the perimeter while she planted marker signs at each point.
