Chapter 218
Robert filled the last missing spot Hayley treeded.
With him around, Hayley no longer had to deal with miscellaneous chores.
Before long, the end of the month arrived.
Thanks to everyone working together, all the greenhouses in Haylight Base were finally completed.
On the last day of the month, a cold snap swept in. The temperature dropped straight below freezing, and snow started falling that same day.
Every fragile crop and fruit plant was tucked safely under the polymer greenhouses, and even the pig peas were covered with tarps.
Haylight Base protected every plant and every animal. Naturally, the people needed protection, too.
Hayley pulled out a batch of winter down jackets and handed them out for free.
“This is a benefit from Haylight Base. One for each person.”
The residents stared at the warm jackets, including the tiny ones made specially for kids, and were instantly overwhelmed. Many were nearly in tears.
“Mom, Dad, look! I got new clothes! Ms. Reid let me pick mine myself. Isn’t it pretty?”
It was Cloudia’s first new outfit since the apocalypse, and she bounced around excitedly as she modeled it for her parents.
“It’s beautiful!” Kate’s eyes filled instantly. She leaned on Anthony’s shoulder, voice choked. “Honey, we really met an angel. Ms. Reid is such a good person.”
Anthony stroked her hair and nodded firmly. “You’re right.”
If they had never met Hayley, even if they hadn’t starved to death, they never would have lived this well.
Back then, zombies surrounded the entire neighborhood. Anthony had tried to leave once and found out the outside was even worse. They survived by sprouting beans and growing tiny amounts of vegetables inside their villa.
It was Hayley who cleared the zombies. She even gave them meat, real food, and supplies. And now, she was giving themeW winter clothes.
Julian’s group was even more emotional.
They remembered being trapped in that zombie-filled factory, and how Hayley appeared like some kind of divine rescue.
If it weren’t for her, they would have died long ago.
She brought them home, fed them, and sheltered them, and now, she was giving them new clothes.
In their eyes, she really was a goddess.
“Honey, I never thought we’d live to see this year’s snow,” Julian’s wife, Rowena, whispered as they sat together under a thick blanket, watching flakes drift past the window. “We have food. We have warm clothes. We’re alive ”
“We’ve got Ms. Reid to thank for that.”
“Yeah.”
Meanwhile, over at Cyril’s place….
“Professor Floyd, I swear, I need to thank you properly. If we had stayed in Base K1, who knows what kind of miserable lite we
Ba Uving!”
“Seriously. Base Ki doesn’t evil have free down jackets Mike told me that he was talking to Lane through the no es co little girl said that Base R1 has nothing! When her family heard we got new jackets, they nearly cried from wait
“Let them be jealous! Serves them right!”
“Exactly! We invited them, and they refused. They even mocked Ms Reid Now look at them. They deserve it
“Ms. Reid is a genuinely good person. We followed the right person this time.”
The newest members of Haylight Base, Otis and his group, were grinning ear to ear as they carried their jarkets
“I knew staying was the right choice. No way Base K1 is this nice.”
