Chapter 22
Hayley probably saw a little bit of herself in this young girl so she generously shared some survival tips. Whether the girl followed them or even saw her text was up to fate.
After sending the message, Hayley started her physical training inside her base. She wanted to push her body back to the peak it had reached before.
As she started her routine, a chime rang in her mind.
Ding! [Super Lord System activated! Within ten days, the host will receive rewards for combat power improvements. Final rewards will be based on completion rating!]
Hayley was pleasantly surprised.
Already motivated by her training, she got even more fired up. This time, she was determined to reach 100% completion.
“Let’s go!”
Inside her bunker, Hayley began an insane, military-style workout.
“Three hundred fifty-four! Three hundred fifty-five! Three hundred fifty-six!… Three sixty!”
Drenched in sweat, she finished 360 sets of exercises. By the last plank, she felt like her entire body was falling apart. Every ounce of strength was drained.
But even as she pushed herself to exhaustion, she could feel her limits being broken again and again.
She was improving, getting stronger.
This routine had been taught to her by her most loyal subordinate back in the base, Leonard Woods.
He had been a soldier; during the apocalypse, he was sent to Aecraton for a rescue mission, only to be abandoned by his superiors. His teammates were either dead or scattered, leaving him alone until Hayley rescued him at her old base.
Quiet and disciplined, he never spoke much-he just executed orders.
He was Hayley’s sharpest weapon. Many squads tried to recruit him, but he wouldn’t leave her. Soldiers like him had extreme loyalty. Once he chose to follow Hayley, betrayal was impossible.
Later, he sacrificed himself during a zombie siege, right in front of her.
After finishing her workout, Hayley reflected on her past life. This time, her path was different. The people and events of her previous life were out of reach.
She reminded herself to be content. She had Summer-and that was enough.
Dragging her exhausted body, she took a shower.
Meanwhile, she made a pot of pasta, heated ten self-heating meals in the microwave, and fried five golden, fragrant eggs.
After her shower, she piled the food inside the pot, opened soda, and curled up in front of her computer.
Big workouts required big meals!
She had plenty of supplies, plus sustainable food sources like eggs, chicken, and fish-she could eat however she wanted.
