The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 21

Chapter 21

Hayley figured that she would need to take in a few more dogs later on.

“Let’s go! Summer, time to eat!”

“Woof, woof, woof!”

Hayley and Summer headed back into her fully upgraded bunker.

After a big meal, Hayley went online.

It was the third day since the apocalypse began. The internet was still working…for now.

After the zombie outbreak, the city’s water supply went downhill fast. Countless zombie bodies floated in the water treatment plants, contaminating everything immediately.

Electricity lasted a little longer. Smaller towns with weak grids lost power right away, while bigger cities with more robust systems could hold out anywhere from one to six months.

Hayley remembered that in Aecraton during her last life, electricity lasted three months. Once the power went out, the internet followed soon after.

Of course, later on, hardly anyone even cared about going online. Early survivors still had some supplies, such as food and water. Stuck at home, they logged on just to pass the time.

After a week, supplies ran out. Who would bother checking the internet then?

[Help! I’m trapped in my bedroom, and my parents are banging on my door! I haven’t eaten in three days! I drank the last bottle of soda! Somebody please save me!]

[Does anyone know the owner of A-101 in Waterrein Gardens? My girlfriend’s been missing for three days! I just want to know if she’s okay!]

[Waaah! We ran out of water at home. There’s still a little smack, but no water! What do I do without water?]

[They said there’d be a rescue! I’ve been waiting three days and nothing’s come!]

[Day three of the apocalypse. The hallways are full of screams. The fridge is almost empty. My dad told me to go find food for my younger siblings. He said if I don’t, he’ll throw me out. I’m old enough to help my family. Wish me luck! Love, Sunny.]

Hayley scrolled through post after post and noticed a girl named Always Sunny.

She opened the girl’s page.

Before the apocalypse, Always Sunny had shared lifestyle posts. Hayley saw that she had lost her mother early and her father remarried soon after. The stepmother had two more kids, and the girl was basically invisible in the family.

Early in the outbreak, they had been lucky enough to hide a home. However, their food quickly ran out.

Hayley didn’t need to guess what would happen next-they would push the girl out.

And somehow, the girl was still optimistic, She actually went. Her latest post had been just five minutes ago.

Hayley typed a reply.

[Armor up first. Wear your thickest, strongest clothes. Wrap your hands and feet with tape three times. Put on a helmet and grab a backpack. Stick to a set route. Your only pal is the nearest convenience store. Don’t go anywhere else.
