The Endgame Chronicles (by Hugh White) novel Chapter 220

A brutal cold snap swept across the entire Eastern region

Overnight, blizzards froze everything.

Just as the big and small bases were starting to recover from the chaos of the early days of the apocalypse, an intense cold snap swept in without warning.

Supplies were already tight, especially anything meant to keep people warm, and the freezing wave caught them with almost no preparation at all.

It turned an already desperate situation into something even harder to survive.

Even the larger bases with better stockpiles, including those that had once followed Base K1 to the granary to haul back goods, found themselves barely getting through the bitter cold.

At Base K1, Liam was going through reports when his satellite phone rang.

“Hello, Captain Caldwell. I’m Alex Kirk, from Hope Base.”

Chapter 250

“What is it?” Liam asked Alex directly.

“I heard you brought a batch of data and equipment out of United Pharma, right?” Alexsaid.

“And what are you trying to say?”

“United Pharma is one of Dawn Holdings’ subsidiaries. Whatever data they had, I have it, too. In fact, I have even more research material on crystal cores.

“Captain Caldwell, I’m guessing you’ve already extracted evolution serum and discovered that the ones made from United Pharma’s crystal core formula are full of impurities, with pretty heavy side effects… Correct?”

Liam raised a brow. “And?”

Alex felt the timing was perfect. His confidence rose.

“Hope Base wants to make a deal with you. Our evolution serum has half the impurities of yours. The side effects are reduced by 30%. Give us 100 tons of grain and 1,000 winter coats, and I’ll send you 100 vials of evolution serum.”

He was absolutely sure Liam wouldn’t refuse.

Alex believed Hope Base’s evolution serum was top-tier and globally unmatched. It had a higher purity, 50% fewer contaminants, and 30% fewer side effects.

Selling one vial for a ton of grain was pricey, sure, but Alex was confident that his serum was worth that much, and that Liam would definitely take the deal.

Just as Alex was brimming with confidence, the satellite phone crackled with a soft laugh.

“Captain Caldwell, what’s so funny? Is the price too high?” Alex asked proudly. “Hope Base has the best tech in the world. Our evolution serum is absolutely worth that price.”

Liam’s chuckle deepened.

“Tell me, Alex… Have you heard of Haylight Base’s evolution serum?”

“W-Wait. Haylight Base is making evolution serum, too?” Alex’s confidence vanished instantly.

“Yes. Captain Reid’s serum has zero impurities, zero side effects…and the price is extremely low.”

Alex felt a bomb going off in his head.

After finishing her camp stew, Hayley was about to tell Hayz to message Liam about getting a few crystal cores when Liam’s transmission came through first.

“My dear Ms. Reid, you have a new message…from your dear Liam,” Hayz announced

“Answer it.”

“Ms. Reid, I want another batch of evolution serum. Same price as before Is that okay?”

Hayley grinned. Ask, and ye shall receive.

“Sure. Get me some mental variant zombie crystal cores. If you can bring them in, I’ll trade you ten vials of evolution serum for every core.”

She needed a huge supply of crystal cores, especially mental variant ones. But obviously, her little base didn’t have enough manpower. Even if they all went out to hunt, they wouldn’t find enough

But other bases? Other bases had people.

So Hayley decided to trade and in Base K1 into her outsourced zombie clearing workforce.

Haylight Base only needed to focus on production, and she would work on expanding her territory, while Base K1 killed zombies and delivered crystal cores straight to her door.

It was a total win.

She didn’t even have to support them with supplies, which made it an even better deal.

Liam, who already felt he was getting the best deal of his life, only became more certain after hearing Hope Base’s ridiculous asking price earlier.

“Oh, right, there’s one more thing,” Liam said. “Hope Base wants to buy the evolution serum from you.”

“Alex?” Hayley’s eyes lit up.

“Yes. He just contacted me. He tried to sell me his evolution serum, but after I told him you’ve got something better, he got desperate. Now, he wants to buy a vial from you.”

Chapter 271

“How much is he selling then for?” Hayley asked Liam.

“One vial for one ton of food plusten winter coats,” he replied.

Hayley couldn’t hold back her shock.

Damn it, Alex had really gone too far this time.

No, the point was, Hayley wished she had charged way more!

This was an insane loss for her!

How could he dare charge something that outrageous?!

“Are you going to sell it to him?” Liam asked.

“Of course, I am!” Hayley snapped. “But it’s going to be a thousand crystal cores, and one of them has to be from a mental- variant mutant zombie. Otherwise, he’s not getting a single vial!”

Hayley was unbelievably annoyed. She could tolerate it when she wasn’t making money herself, but seeing someone she hated make a fortune was unbearable.

It made her want to lose it.

“I want you to spread the word,” Hayley added. “My evolution serum can be bought by every base, 20 crystal cores per dose. Except Hope Base. For them, it’s that special price.”

She wasn’t just going to squeeze Alex. She was going to crush him in a price war, too.

Watching him make money made her feel worse than anything.

There was no way she was letting this go. Not a chance!

Liam couldn’t help laughing when he heard her angry rant.

“Alright, I’ll make sure everyone knows. One more thing, though. I’m planning another multi-base operation. We’re going to raid a clothing mall. You in?”

“Who’s going?”

“I invited a lot of bases this time, but most of them turned it down,” Liam said honestly.

The temperature had dropped too quickly. Those small bases that went with them to collect food last time were no longer willing to go out again.

They already had food stored for winter, so they didn’t want to take the risk.

They could wait until spring.

On top of that, the clothing mall was far away, a huge distribution center in the outer suburbs. No one knew how dangerous it

was out there.
